Ukraine, U.S.-Europe rift at U.N.

NEW YORK (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – The United Nations General Assembly, on the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, passed two resolutions. The second, however, submitted by the United States, with amendments that ultimately resulted in the abstention of the United States itself. The first resolution, led by Ukraine and supported by almost all EU countries condemned Russia’s actions, called for the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces and reaffirmed Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It received 93 votes in favor, 18 against and 65 abstentions. A decline in support was noted compared to similar measures in previous years, which had received more than 140 votes in favor. The resolution proposed by the United States called for a quick end to the conflict and a lasting peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, but without explicitly mentioning Russian aggression. After amendments introduced by some European countries, which stressed Ukrainian sovereignty and condemned the invasion, the United States abstained from voting on its own proposal. The amended version received 93 votes in favor, 8 against and 73 abstentions.
Italy voted with Europe, both in the Ukraine resolution and for the U.S. resolution as amended by the EU.
The divergence between the US and European countries highlights different strategies: while the Trump administration seems to be pursuing a negotiating approach that concedes a lot to Moscow, European nations insist on a firm stance against Russian aggression. This reflects the growing tensions in the international community over the way forward to achieve peace in Ukraine. UN General Assembly resolutions, while not legally binding, carry great moral and political weight. This afternoon the rift will come up again at the Security Council, where the U.S. will present a resolution that could be supported by Russia but rejected by the majority of countries, of which let us recall that France and the UK with their possible negative vote (but could abstain) have veto power.
