ROME (ITALPRESS) – The Jeddah talks kicked off today in Saudi Arabia, in which Ukraine proposed to the United States a plan for a partial ceasefire with Russia, an initiative through which Kiev hopes to win back the White House, which is demanding concessions to end the three-year war.
The talks in Saudi Arabia will be the most significant meeting since the Feb. 28 White House clash. Zelensky, who has since sent a letter of apology to Trump, traveled to the Red Sea city of Jeddah to meet with the Saudi crown prince, but left the talks with the Americans to three of his top aides. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman received Ukrainian President Zelensky at the royal court of Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah last night.
The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Zelensky held an official discussion session, during which they reviewed aspects of bilateral relations between the two countries and discussed the latest developments and developments in the Ukrainian crisis. The Saudi Crown Prince stressed the Kingdom’s commitment and support for all international efforts and initiatives aimed at resolving the crisis and achieving peace.
In turn, the Ukrainian president expressed his gratitude to Saudi Arabia for its efforts and key role in the region and the world. President Zelensky also expressed his gratitude for the support of the Saudi Crown Prince and for Saudi Arabia’s efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived at the head of a U.S. delegation to hold peace talks with Ukraine. The U.S. State Department had previously said that Rubio would meet with Saudi officials during his stay in Jeddah between March 10-12 and hold talks with the Ukrainian side ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s planned visit to Saudi Arabia in a few weeks.
The U.S. Secretary of State, who will be joined at the talks by Trump’s national security adviser Mike Walz, said the suspension of aid to Ukraine is “something I hope we can resolve” in Tuesday’s talks. “We hope that the meeting will be fruitful and that there will be good news to report,” the U.S. secretary added.
