NAPOLI (ITALPRESS) – The philosopher Andrea Mazzucchi, the new rector of the University of Naples Federico II will take office next September. He was elected on July 3rd at the first round with a broad consensus, Mazzucchi succeeds Professor Matteo Lorito and will lead the Athenaeum for the 6026-2032. The settlement of the neorector of the Federician, takes place two months in advance of the natural expiration of the charge of his predecessor.
Lorito, in fact, anticipated the closing of his mandate on 9 July, which would come to an end on 31 October 2026, to assume the role of member of the Governing Council of the National Agency for Evaluation of the University System and Research (ANVUR). In the period of vacatio, until 31 August next, Professor Angela Zampella, former head of the University, assumed the position as director of functions. Among the main objectives of the new Rector is to make Frederick II increasingly competitive on the national and international level, strengthening at the same time the role of great public university, presidio of knowledge, freedom and democracy.
A more cohesive, inclusive and attended university, in which all members of the university community are involved in decision-making and in which students and students are at the centre of institutional action.
“I take this assignment – says Rector Mazzucchi – with a very strong sense of responsibility and with the awareness of entering the history of an extraordinary university, to which I have devoted much of my academic life. The first priority will be to build an increasingly united and cohesive university community, able to value the extraordinary richness of the skills of Frederick II and to face with confidence the transformations we have ahead. A large university cannot be the sum of particular interests nor can it be governed by centralized management: it must instead value its different joints and involve them in the construction of decisions. First of all, we will focus our students and students, working to effectively improve their university experience. At the same time, we will strive to strengthen the University’s ability to produce teaching and research excellence and compete internationally, supporting our researchers in access to competitive funding and promoting interdisciplinary and international collaborations. In fact, the university cannot be only the place where skills are acquired and studies are conducted, but it must represent the fundamental lever in the construction of critical knowledge, in the ability to read the present and to design the future, also at the service of the community. This is the responsibility that I would like to take along with the whole of the faith community in the coming years.”.
Andrea Mazzucchi, born in 1966, Neapolitan of adoption, is an ordinary professor of Philology of Italian literature, at the second term leading the Department of Humanities Studies of Federico II, former president of the School of Human and Social Sciences of the University. Considered among the most authoritative scholars of Dante and the medieval Italian literary tradition, it was formed between Naples and Florence and is author of over 300 publications.
He is an ordinary member of the Accademia Pontaniana and the National Society of Sciences, Letters and Arts, president of the Society of Philologists of Italian Literature and member of the Academy of the Crusca. Since 2017 he has been managing, at the Biblioteca dei Girolamini in Naples, the School of High Education in History and Philology of Manuscript and the Ancient Book, set up in agreement between Frederick II and the Ministry of Culture in response to the serious librarian plunder that in 2012 had hit the historical library, and which led to the creation of the new catalogs of the incunabula and the ancient manuscripts of the monumental complex. With Andrea Mazzucchi the Federician Rector returns to a humanist for the first time by the mandate of Professor Fulvio Tessitore (1993-2001).
