US, Congress certifies Trump’s presidential victory

WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – The U.S. Congress has officially certified Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election. Despite a snowstorm, the joint session convened on Capitol Hill, with Vice President Kamala Harris personally certifying his defeat, just as happened to Republican Richard Nixon in 1961 and Democrat Al Gore in 2001.
Also present in the courtroom was Vice President-elect JD Vance, seated in the front row, who was greeted with applause upon officially certifying the victory in his home state of Ohio, officially casting his electoral votes for the Trump-Vance pair.
The vote took place after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol four years ago in an attempt to block the certification of his 2020 defeat. Since then, the current president-elect has continued to raise conspiracy theories regarding Joe Biden’s victory.
Four years later, the congressional certification took place in a peaceful and formal atmosphere, with the official results reporting Trump’s victory with 312 electoral college votes to Kamala Harris’ 226. Republicans also won a majority in the Senate, gaining a slight advantage over the House of Representatives.
This implies that Trump will have leeway regarding the implementation of his planned program of tax cuts and crackdown on immigrants living illegally across the country from the time of his inauguration, scheduled for next Jan. 20.
Regarding what happened on Jan. 6 four years ago, Trump has repeatedly made known his intention to pardon the approximately 1,500 people accused of taking part in the Capitol Hill assault, an occasion when more than 140 police officers were attacked, with the rioters causing more than $2.8 million in damages.
Precisely because of what happened that day, Congress passed legislation to strengthen safeguards to ensure that the traditional vote certification process is handled in a formal, peaceful and legal manner, as it was today.
Ahead of today’s vote, Capitol Police and the Secret Service put up a temporary fence around Capitol Hill, defining Jan. 6 as a “special national security event.” Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger said the fence will be removed only after Trump takes office.
