WASHINGTON (USA) (ITALPRESS) – The longest closure of the government in American history could end today, on the 43rd day of shutdown, after the President of the House, Mike Johnson, recalled the representatives in session. The House should approve the bill for the reopening of the government already passed to the Senate Monday evening, that President Donald Trump defined a “great victory”. The vote requires almost complete presence of Republicans, and possible delays in closing travel could complicate the quorum needed. Johnson said: “We are very optimistic about voting tonight. We think this will happen and we regret that it took so long.” The House was not in legislative session since 19 September; tonight the final vote is scheduled for 19 US hours and the measure, if approved, will be sent to Trump for signature.
Despite the possible end of shutdown, none of the parts will be completely satisfied. Democrats challenge the lack of health insurance provisions and the absence of an extension of tax credits provided for by the Affordable Care Act. Republicans, while controlling the Chamber and the Senate, suffered negative results from recent polls and state and local elections. Today’s vote will therefore be decisive not only to put an end to the political and administrative crisis, but also to measure the cohesion and capacity of Republicans to the House and the ability of Congress to manage compromises at a time of strong political tension.
