Venezuela, De Vito “Liberation of Trentini and Burlò is a great result”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “I would like to share the satisfaction of the Italian embassy and institutions here in Venezuela, also of the two consulates of Caracas and Maracaibo, for the excellent result that Italy, the country, has achieved with the liberation of Alberto Trentini and the entrepreneur Mario Burlò”. The Italian Ambassador to Caracas, Giovanni Umberto De Vito, said this in an interview that will be published tomorrow in the new episode of Diplomacy Magazine, the column of geopolitical agency Italpress conducted by Claudio Brachino. Both Trentini and Burlò were arrested a few days away from each other, in November 2024, and spent more than 14 months in a maximum security prison. The embassy, as De Vito recalled, followed the cases from the beginning. “I had permission to visit them twice. Then there was a very long negotiation that I don’t want to detail right now. The acceleration took place on Friday with an announcement by the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly. These authorities were willing to make a gesture for the international community and free several prisoners. From there, intense negotiations began at the highest level. Minister Tajani called me several times, spoke with his counterpart here and then, on Sunday, we had various meetings until in the late evening, then on Monday night for Italy, we managed to get that they were delivered”, explained the ambassador. “They were brought to the Italian residence, then to the premises of the embassy. One cannot imagine their joy, their sense of liberation, emotion. They immediately spoke with the President of the Council Giorgia Meloni, with the Vice-President of the Council and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and then obviously wanted to speak with their respective families. We offered every possible assistance until the time of departure, guests assisted in the residence of Italy”, concluded De Vito. “I met the interim president Rodriguez on Monday, the day after the release of the compatriots. I transmitted the message of the President of the Meloni Council, that it was a message of appreciation for the gesture that they wanted to give us, both a message of openness, of will to build a new relationship, to turn a page and to collaborate”, he added the diplomat. “The interim president responded positively,” said De Vito. On the general situation in Venezuela, De Vito noted that the country “is in a very delicate phase”, which can be defined as “slow heat”. “The country is returning to normal, there are no episodes of violence or tension. The schools are still not open and this is an indicator of the fact that the situation is not completely stabilized, but there is a control of security, of the public order, and I would say that the most important thing is to turn respect and attention to this first stage, and offer opportunities of collaboration”, the ambassador observed. “This country needs hope, needs to look at tomorrow with a little more confidence and above all it needs to surround more resources in the economic system, so that the population perceives that it is beginning a positive change,” he concluded.
