Veronica Mainetti tells why she wanted to give light to the Flatiron in New York

After the tricolor lights that on 13 October 2025 colored the Empire State Building in New York, a gesture told through the words of Professor Valter Mainetti, Chairman and CEO of Condotte 1880, who recalled how those lights “uniscate the generations of Italians who dreamed and built”, a new Manhattan symbol prepares to shine. “The lighting of the Flatiron Building, New York’s architectural and cultural icon, represents a historical moment not only for Manhattan, but also for all those who believe in the value of memory and architectural beauty.” Veronica Mainetti, President of The Sorgente Group (of America).

“Every city speaks its own language. New York is made of energy, courage and light. I have lived here for more than 20 years, and every time I look up to the Flatiron I find the same magic that made me fall in love with this city: the ability to reinvent itself, to reborn without ever forgetting who it is. The idea of illuminating it was born from there, from a gesture of love to a symbol that reminds us that beauty resists in time. In fact, the Flatiron Building – continued – will be illuminated for the first time in its 123 years of history. This project, created in collaboration between The Sorgente Group (of America) and The Brodsky Organization, is the result of a vision cultivated over a decade ago: I have always imagined that the Flatiron could live even at night, returning its charm and strength to the city through light.”.

For President Mainetti: “The reflection that led me concerns the deep link between memory and urban identity. Today this reflection becomes reality thanks to a collaboration that I consider a natural evolution of our commitment to preserve and reinterpret the great architectural symbols of New York. The intervention we wanted, and that obtained the approval of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, – he explained – previews an innovative LED lighting system, designed to enhance the details in terracotta and the historical lines of the facade. It is a way to project on the city a new light, not only physical, but also symbolic, able to strengthen the link between citizens and their own history, and to inspire future generations. In this sense, I am deeply grateful to all those who have believed in the project and who have worked with us to make this transformation possible. Illuminating the Flatiron – said Mainetti – means celebrating New York and its ability to innovate, never forgetting its roots and identity”.
