Another twist in the Jannik Sinner doping case: the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has announced that it is appealing the tennis star’s acquittal by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) in the Clostebol case. The appeal, filed on September 26, was made official today with a statement on WADA’s website: “The agency believes that the finding of ‘no fault or negligence’ was not in line with the applicable rules.”
The case now moves to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which will decide whether Sinner will face a suspension, though any potential ban would not be retroactive prior to the final ruling.
The president of the Italian Tennis Federation (FITP) commented, “We have great confidence in the CAS, which will deliver the final word on the case. Given that Sinner not only has the facts on his side but has been acquitted by three independent bodies, I’m sure WADA’s appeal will only have a positive effect, confirming the young player’s innocence and allowing him to return to the sport with peace of mind.”
The South Tyrolean champion expressed his disappointment: “Of course, I’m very disappointed and surprised by this appeal, to be honest, because we had three expert opinions, and all three were in my favor. I truly didn’t expect this.”
