“Water, agriculture and health”, in Rome a conference on water resource management

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In the present time, marked by the intensification of the climate crisis, priority is the protection, governance and proper management of water resources, essential organic connector for the conservation of ecosystems, stability and quality of agri-food productions and, clearly, for human health and all living organisms.

To guarantee equal rights and opportunities to each person, the availability and quality of water in the long term and food accessible and safe, it is necessary to implement a sustainable and resilient water management, capable of absorbing extreme shocks such as prolonged drought and flood phenomena. A scenario that, in addition to the maintenance of networks and other existing strategic infrastructures, imposes the realization of new works and infrastructure systems, together with more investments in research and development to promote structured planning, the result of increasingly structural synergies between institutions and stakeholders, aimed at defining policies and developing flexible and integrated governance models.

Preventing criticality that causes permanent emergency management is possible and necessary but in order to respond to these increasingly urgent challenges one cannot ignore a true eco-digital revolution. Safety, quality and sustainability in agriculture and in the water sector can count on technological innovation, capillary digitization of infrastructure, use of algorithms and artificial intelligence that, in synergy with the activity of the excellent research institutes that boasts Italy allow efficiency and circularity.

A vision that allows the agricultural sector and industry to become active custodians of the resource. The primary sector, in particular, with the role played by farmers, represents the first Presidium of environmental protection, ensuring the continuity of vital ecosystem services for habitats and biodiversity. Thanks to precision agriculture and good agronomic practices, food production becomes a fundamental ally in the conservation of natural resources.

This integrated management model and multisectoral and multifunctional synergy directly responds to the need for coordinated action on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular the objectives n. 2 “Ear end to hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture” and n. 6 “Enhancing to all sustainable water and sanitation initiatives”.

Based on these proposals, the UniVerde Foundation and Coldiretti, with the support of UNESCO WWAP – World Water Assessment Programme, with the sponsorship of Rai and with the main partnership of Almaviva Group, promote the conference “Water, Agriculture and Health: innovation and research for safety, quality and sustainability” that will take place in Rome, Thursday 19 March, at 15.30, at the Salasi delle Statue di Palazzo Rospi.
