Western Sahara, Albania supports Morocco’s autonomy plan

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Albania has recognized the importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco and expressed its support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, considering it a “serious and credible” basis for the resolution of the regional dispute. The position was made official in a joint statement signed in Rabat by Albania’s Foreign Minister, Igli Hasani, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. This was reported by the Moroccan news agency Map.

In the document, Tirana stressed the value of Morocco’s efforts within the UN framework to find a negotiated solution acceptable to all parties. The two ministers also reiterated their support for the UN-led political process and the efforts of the Secretary General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, in compliance with Security Council resolutions, including the recent Resolution 2756 (2024). Albania’s support is part of the growing international dynamic in favor of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and the Kingdom’s proposed autonomy plan, supported by more than 120 UN member countries.
