RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – Hungary is in favor of Morocco’s proposed Autonomy Plan for the Sahara, considering it “the most credible basis” for a lasting solution to the conflict. The position was reiterated in a joint statement signed in Rabat at the end of a meeting between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szijjártó.
This declaration comes amid growing international momentum in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. The Autonomy Plan, presented by Morocco in 2007, has gained recognition as a pragmatic and sustainable solution to resolve this dispute.
“Hungary supports the efforts of the Kingdom of Morocco and endorses the Autonomy Plan as a key contribution to the stability of the region,” the statement read. Both ministers reiterated their support for the UN-led political process and the Secretary General’s efforts to reach a solution in accordance with Security Council resolutions.
The joint communiqué also emphasizes the positive role Morocco and Hungary play in their respective regions to ensure security, stability and peace. The two countries reaffirm the importance of peaceful conflict resolution and respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states.
With this position, Hungary joins the majority of countries around the world that recognize the value of the Autonomy Plan as a key element for a political solution. The recent UN Security Council resolution welcomed this approach, urging constructive engagement by all parties involved.
The meeting between the two ministers was also an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties between Rabat and Budapest. The two nations pledged to intensify cooperation in various fields, consolidating a strategic partnership based on common values and shared goals.
With Hungarian support, Morocco gains additional support within the European Union for its autonomy plan, thus strengthening its diplomatic position in the region and internationally.
More than 115 UN member countries support autonomy, including 20 EU members, and more than 30 countries have opened consulates in the cities of Layoune and Dakhla As a sign of recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty.
