Western Sahara, Qatar reaffirms support for Moroccan autonomy plan

ROME (ITALPRESS) – The State of Qatar on Monday in New York reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, describing it as a “constructive” initiative and an “objective” basis for any realistic and lasting solution to the regional dispute around Western Sahara.
Speaking before members of the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, Qatar’s representative Jassim Al-Thani expressed his country’s support for the UN Secretary-General’s efforts to facilitate the achievement of a lasting political solution and compromise within the framework of the process carried out under the auspices of the United Nations, in accordance with Security Council resolutions, including 2703, and with respect for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The diplomat also welcomed the efforts made by the UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, expressing hope to see a final and lasting solution to this dispute materialize, in favor of strengthening stability and cooperation in the region as well as international peace and security.
The dynamic of Morocco’s recognition of its sovereignty over the Sahara and support for its autonomy initiative has seen fortr momentum in recent years . There are more than 112 UN member countries that support autonomy, including 20 EU members, and more than 30 countries that have opened consulates in the cities of Layoune and Dakhla As a sign of recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty.
