Wizz-Air, the new direct flight to Palermo-Sofia

PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – The expansion of Wizz Air in Sicily continues. The airline, which has been a record year with over 21 million passengers transported to Italy, and Gesap, an international airport management company Falcone Borsellino, today announces the new direct link between Palermo and Sofia. The flights between the two cities will officially start on the next 4 July 2026, with a schedule that includes three weekly frequencies fixed – every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday during the summer season and every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the winter.

Travellers who want to plan their next adventure to the Bulgarian capital will be able to buy tickets from today, visiting the official website wizzair.com or using the WIZZ mobile app. The announcement of this new route is part of a strategic investment and expansion phase for the Palermo airport, where Wizz Air continues to strengthen its operational presence at the airport “Falcone Borsellino”.

This consolidation with the city and its airport is not only a sign of deep trust towards the Sicilian territory, but represents the fundamental motor that allows to activate new international connections and to guarantee an increasingly capillary and reliable connectivity between Sicily and the rest of Europe. All the connections will be operated with the modern Airbus A321neo aircraft characterized by reduced consumption, greater operational efficiency and superior comfort on board, confirming the company’s commitment to an increasingly efficient fleet oriented to the best possible travel experience.

Soprannominata often the “City that grows but does not grow old”, Sofia is a capital with magnetic charm, where millennia of history live with a vibrant and cosmopolitan urban soul. Walking through its streets, travelers can pass in a few steps from the majestic golden domes of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral to the archaeological remains of the ancient Roman Serdica, to the most modern districts that today make it one of the main technological poles of Europe.

“The new Palermo-Sofia once again represents the central role that the company wants to give to Sicily, a vision that fits into our growth path,” said Salvatore Gabriele Imperiale, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air. “We are proud to offer Palestinian and Sicilian citizens a direct access to a destination rich in cultural and commercial opportunities such as Bulgaria, continuing to invest in the territory to generate new tourist flows and value for the local economy. This new route is yet another fruit of our close partnership with Gesap. Cooperation that confirms itself more solid than ever and works daily in the interest of Palermo and Sicilian passengers. We look forward to seeing them board our new and interesting routes. Let’s WIZZ, Palermo”.

On the other side of the air bridge, Palermo is confirmed as a capital of hospitality and an open-air museum of invaluable value. Famous for its Arab-Normanno itinerary, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the city offers a unique sensory experience that merges Byzantine architectures, baroques and historical markets that clean of life and traditional flavors. With its overlooking the sea, the mild climate all year round and a world-famous gastronomic offer, Palermo is not only the heart of Sicily, but a destination capable of enchanting anyone looking for an authentic immersion in history, the sea and the deepest traditions of the Mediterranean.

“The activation of the new direct link Palermo-Sofia is a concrete step in the strategy of strengthening the international network of the airport Falcone Borsellino of Palermo. We work to build an ever wider, stable and diversified connectivity, capable of generating value not only in terms of passenger traffic, but also of economic, tourist and commercial development for the entire territory – says Gianfranco Battisti, managing director of Gesap, the management company of the Palermo airport – The partnership with Wizz Air is strategic confirmation: opening towards the Balkans and south-eastern Europe expands the international position of Palermo and Sicily, intercepting new leisure flows, business and contributing structurally to the seasonalization of demand. This new flight on Sofia – concludes the Gesap Ad – fits into our planned growth path that contemplates more targeted routes, greater quality of connections and integration with tourist and productive development managers. We will continue to invest on companies, destinations and services to make the port of call increasingly competitive in the Mediterranean and increasingly central in passenger travel choices.”.

The introduction of the new flight to Sofia is crucial not only for the development strategy of the International Airport ‘Falcone Borsellino’, but for the entire region, which confirms a vital connection platform in the heart of the Mediterranean. This connection not only enriches the offer for traditional leisure traffic, but aims to intercept high-potential tourist segments, contributing significantly to the seasonalization of flows thanks to the charm of the Bulgarian capital in every period of the year.

At the same time, new and concrete opportunities for commercial interchange are opened, facilitating relations between Sicilian companies and an area of Eastern Europe in a strong economic expansion. With the addition of this destination, the network of international connections from the Palermo airport reaches 4 routes to 4 countries, further consolidating the role of Sicily as a strategic base towards emerging markets.
