ROME (ITALPRESS) – The government wants to combat violence against women “with very specific tools: we have increased funds for anti-violence centers, we have almost doubled them for shelters, we have made a new law that in my opinion is very good with Ministers Piantedosi and Nordio, but this is not enough, we need to move forward” focusing on “prevention and repression” and “on the possibility of interrupting the cycle of violence, with the strengthening of precautionary measures and with some novelties also, for example, deferred arrest in flagrante delicto.” This was said by Family, Natality and Equal Opportunities Minister Eugenia Roccella at the conference “Equal Opportunities, Equal Freedom. Two years of the Meloni government” in the Senate. “We have achieved good results, it is only the beginning. We have two years of legislature and all the things we have put in place we would like to evaluate then at the end, also on the level of violence against women. On the number of feminicides, there has been a small reduction, but we have to achieve all the goals we have set,” he stressed, recalling that “tomorrow there will be the presentation of the white paper for the training of operators of all sectors that are interested in the fight against violence, which was prepared by the Technical Scientific Committee of the Observatory against Violence. For the FdI group leader in the Senate, Lucio Malan, “the first female president of the Council gives many girls the idea that there are no limits, women must be put in a position to really have equal opportunities. To have expanded maternity leave is a great and concrete help to women who have children.” For Manlio Messina, “the government has put a total of 16 billion in support of families,” but “the most difficult work of these years has been to change the paradigm” according to which “the denatality is fought with immigration: instead, women must be put on an equal footing, starting a family does not hinder careers. If a woman wants to have an abortion, that is her right, but if she chooses to have a child, the state must be by her side.” To really change this paradigm, added FdI’s head of Organization, Giovanni Donzelli, “the road taken is the right one, we need to work on education, valuing women’s freedom of choice: this is the best way to achieve equality of opportunity. “The head of FdI’s Equal Opportunities department, Ester Mieli, then recalled that “53 percent of women are employed: it is a historic record. Employment has increased because this government has invested in working women” allowing them “not to have to choose between working and being mothers.” For the head of FdI’s Family Department, Maddalena Morgante, “there are many measures put in place by the Meloni government such as the increase in the single allowance, parental leave, bonuses for daycare centers, and decontribution for working mothers. Certainly the economic lever is important to support families, but it is not enough: we need a cultural lever,” he stressed.
