VENICE (ITALPRESS) – “Duties are nonsense and a double-edged sword. They will affect, yes, our agri-food products and those of many other sectors, but they will also hurt very much American consumers and users who, due to prohibitive prices, will no longer be able to buy, for example, certified and quality wines and foods such as those from Veneto, nor benefit from other Italian excellence.” This was emphasized today by the President of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, commenting on the news that American importers have suspended orders for Prosecco while waiting to see what will happen on April 2, the date the duties are scheduled to take effect.
“Those who produce Prosecco understandably have strong concerns,” Zaia adds, “but this decision by the U.S. importers shows that they, too, risk being penalized. In the United States, an entire supply chain moves around the import of our agri-food products, bringing these goods to the tables of consumers, who, however, in many cases, will no longer be able to afford them. Cui prodest, who benefits from all this?” the governor asks.
“Interlocutions between Italian and American authorities are underway, and I am confident in the results that can arise from reasonable mediation and the strong relations between Italy and the United States, recently strengthened by Premier Meloni. On the part of the Veneto region,” Zaia concludes, “there is full willingness to continue to cultivate very cordial relations with our U.S. friends, working together to develop even closer and more profitable trade relations.
