Zelensky “Kiev is ready to abandon NATO’s request for membership”

BERLIN (GERMANY) (ITALPRESS) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was ready to “dialogue” during talks with senior European and American officials scheduled today and tomorrow in Berlin to find a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine. “The Berlin summit is important,” says Zelensky, during an online press conference, pointing out that talks are scheduled in the German capital “today and tomorrow”. Then, he points out that he has not yet received an American response to the latest version of the proposed plan to end the conflict, amended this week by Kiev and its European allies and then transmitted to Washington.

“I have received – he explains – some messages from my trading team, I’m getting all the signals and I’ll be ready for the dialogue that will begin today.” Then, he reiterates that Kiev desires security from its European allies and Washington to dissuade Russia from attacking it again in case of ceasefire on the front. “We are evaluating a framework plan in 20 points, which ends with a ceasefire – announces -. Today we want to be sure that there will be no repetition of war after a ceasefire.” It points out that “bilateral safety drops” are currently evaluating a mechanism inspired by Article 5 of NATO which provides for mutual protection of member countries, without the formal accession of Ukraine to the Atlantic Alliance, as requested previously by Kiev. “It is already a compromise on our part,” Zelensky points out.

“The plan will not be appreciated to all – continues -. In my view, the most important thing is that the plan is as fair as possible, first of all for Ukraine, because it was Russia to start this war. And, more importantly, it must be effective, so that it is not only a piece of paper, but a significant step towards the end of the war. It is also essential that the plan be structured in such a way as to prevent Russia from launching another – the third – aggression against the Ukrainian people after its signature. For our part, we are discussing with the United States not only our bilateral relations – between Ukraine and America – as security guarantees, but also our response to signals from the Russians. And with regard to the compromises with the Russian side, in any case, if the United States exert pressure, if the partners exert pressure and if America really wants to end this war – as it is demonstrating today at the highest levels – I think the Russians will have to compromise. I think today a fair and realistic option would be to maintain current positions, to stay where we are. This is the reality of a ceasefire: the parties remain in their place and then try to solve all the broader issues through diplomacy. I know Russia sees this aspect negatively and we would like the Americans to support us on this issue. The Russians say we have to retire from Donbas, otherwise they’ll take care of it anyway. I discussed it with the Americans and told them that there are many insinuations of various kinds. For example, as in the case of Kupiansk: they claimed to have occupied Kupiansk and that we were surrounded. Recently I was in Kupiansk and showed who actually controls the city. There is much disinformation from the Russians. That’s why I sent clear signals to our colleagues in the United States so that they don’t believe in everything Russia says.”.
