On Thursday morning, Franco Alfieri, a Democratic Party politician and president of the Salerno province since 2022, was arrested in Campania. Alfieri, who has also served as mayor of Capaccio Paestum since 2019, is under investigation for corruption and bid-rigging. The investigation, which began in January, alleges that Alfieri manipulated the awarding of public contracts to benefit specific companies.
The case centers around the allocation of a public tender for the “modernization, expansion, and energy efficiency of the municipal public lighting system” in Capaccio Paestum. The project, which also included road lighting upgrades, was won by Dervit Spa, a company that prosecutors claim Alfieri improperly favored.
Alfieriās arrest marks a significant development in the investigation, with further legal proceedings expected as authorities continue to examine the extent of the alleged corruption. This case has raised concerns about transparency and integrity in the administration of public tenders in the region.
