Kazakhstan, the Regional Ecological Summit 2026 closed in Astana

ASTANA (KAZAKISTAN) (ITALPRESS) – The Regional Ecological Summit 2026 (Res) ended in Astana, which from 22 April brought together political leaders, institutional representatives and experts to address the main environmental challenges of Central Asia. Promoted by the Kazakh ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources in collaboration with the United Nations and other international organisations, the summit represented the first broad-based platform dedicated to the development of shared strategies for the protection of ecosystems, the management of water resources and the conservation of biodiversity in the region. According to the Astana Times, the work opened on April 22 with a plenary session in the presence of the Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and developed along eight main directors, including climate transition, food security, sustainable resource management and environmental innovation. During the course of 58 meetings between panel, technical meetings and comparison sessions, participants deepened strategic themes.

In the course of the work, articulated in numerous meetings and thematic sessions, the need to develop shared approaches and common operational tools has emerged to address increasingly interconnected issues. Among the topics discussed, particular attention was also devoted to the governance of water resources, including the prospect of establishing an international body dedicated under the auspices of the United Nations. At the same time, the Expo RES 2026 offered a showcase of the main innovations in the field of green technologies, highlighting the progress of Kazakhstan in the protection of biodiversity and the development of advanced environmental solutions, with the participation of hundreds of companies and thousands of international visitors.

The initiative of the Regional Ecological Summit was launched by Kazakh President Tokayev in September 2023, at the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations, and subsequently expanded in his thematic perimeter during the Astana International Forum in 2025, from a predominantly climate focus to a wider environmental approach. The summit was also able to count on the formal support of the United Nations, expressed through Resolution 78/147 of the General Assembly, dedicated to the environmental challenges of Central Asia and the strengthening of regional cooperation for sustainable development.
