Grotta Paglicci has returned to the center of Italy’s cultural and archaeological debate as institutions and experts renew efforts to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for the prehistoric site. The initiative gained momentum during the national conference “Grotta Paglicci – Heritage of Humanity,” recently held in Rignano Garganico.
The event brought together local authorities, scholars and cultural associations, all united behind a shared commitment to enhance and protect the Paleolithic cave complex. The new strategy includes plans to reopen the museum area, strengthen conservation measures and promote the site as a key driver of tourism and economic development in the Gargano region.
Speakers at the conference underlined Grotta Paglicci’s international importance, describing it as one of the world’s leading Paleolithic landmarks alongside renowned sites such as Altamira in Spain and Lascaux in France. The discussions also focused on recent archaeological discoveries and ongoing research connected to the region’s prehistoric rock art heritage.
The long-term objective is to advance the UNESCO candidacy process and restore international visibility to one of Europe’s most significant prehistoric sites, positioning Grotta Paglicci as both a cultural symbol and a strategic resource for southern Italy’s development
