CAGLIARI (ITALPRESS) – Develop and consolidate forms of institutional collaboration between the Sardinia Region and the General Command of the Corps of the Harbour offices – Coast Guard to give life to actions of protection of the sea and the coast of the island and, at the same time, contribute to the growth of the marine and coastal economic system of the region. It is provided by the Memorandum of Understanding signed yesterday at Villa Devoto by President Alessandra Todde and the General Commander of the Body of the Harbour offices – Coast Guard, Admiral Inspector Sergio Liardo. Present are the Councillor of the Defense of the Environment, Rosanna Laconi and the Captains of Vascello delle Direzioni marittime di Cagliari e Olbia, Paolo Marzio and Gianluca D’Agostino. “For our island, which counts over 1890 kilometers of coast, the sea represents a strategic heritage,” said President Todde. “The coastal system, risked by climate change and, in some cases, excessive anthropization, needs integrated protection, monitoring, enhancement and sustainable management. In this context – he added – the cooperation between Region and Coast Guard plays a fundamental role in the defense of the coasts in the environmental, landscape, social and productive profile”.
“The protocol signed today with the Sardinia region, not only consolidates the fruitful relations existing with the Coast Guard, but represents an agile and innovative tool, useful for the development of one of the most important maritime regions, with positive effects in terms of safety and more generally for the economy of our country,” said Admiral Sergio Liardo, General Commander of the Body. “With the signing of this Protocol – said the Councillor Rosanna Laconi – we strengthen an essential institutional cooperation to protect the sea and the coasts of Sardinia more effectively. Putting skills, knowledge and operational skills into system means having more solid tools to prevent risks, govern changes and ensure concrete and lasting protection.”.
In particular, the areas covered by the Memorandum of Understanding concern: environmental protection and maritime state; protection and valorisation of the coastal strip; safety of marine, bathing and port activities; marine fishing, aquaculture and related sectors; monitoring and control of marine protected areas and areas subject to particular environmental constraints; monitoring of coastal dynamics and erosive phenomena; collection and sharing of data and useful information to regional planning; environmental education and dissemination of the marine environment. The Protocol is a general framework of cooperation that will be implemented through a specific implementing document, elaborated with the involvement of the Marine Directions of Cagliari and Olbia and the respective territorial joints, in which the concrete activities and methods of collaboration between the parties will be defined.
