ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Italy and Greece have signed today in Rome the implementation agreement on the transfer, through Fincantieri, to the Hellenic Navy of two frigates FREMM, Carlo Bergamini and Virginio Fasan, currently in service at the fleet of the Navy. The signing took place between the General Directorate for the Armaments and Investments of Defense (GDAEE) of the Ministry of National Defense Greek and the corresponding General Direction for the Italian Armaments and took place in the presence of the Italian Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto, of the Greek Minister of Defense Nikos Dendias and of the Heads of the respective Marines, the Admiral of Squadra Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto and the Admiral of Team For Fincantieri were present Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager, and Eugenio Santagata, General Manager of the Military Navigation Division.
The implementation agreement follows the Memorandum of Cooperation and the Declaration of Intent signed in September 2025 and further consolidates relations between Italy and Greece. The operation is an opener for the Group for further future opportunities and new collaboration strategies. “In the framework of the understanding – we read in a note – Fincantieri will play a leading role both in the transfer path and in the support activities along the entire life cycle of the two units, as well as in strengthening industrial collaboration with Greece. The agreement defines the main aspects relating to the transfer of the two units, the initial and subsequent support activities, necessary to guarantee the operational availability and the involvement of the Greek industry in the maintenance activities and the adaptation of the ships to new systems”.
“The two units, designed and built by Fincantieri for the Navy, represent one of the most advanced expressions of the Group’s technological and industrial capabilities, validating a model that combines innovation, operational support and long-term international cooperation, as well as the value of the FREMM platform in terms of adaptability, flexibility and continuity in naval activities,” continues the note. “The progress of the transfer path also opens up new opportunities for industrial synergies between Fincantieri and the Greek industrial system, with relapses in activities along the supply chain. The entry of the FREMMs in the Hellenic Navy is also a first step towards a wider integration of skills, technologies and industrial capacities among the countries that adopt the platform, with sharing of knowledge and development of further technological developments“, said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri.
