A few months after the conclusion of the Olympic and Winter Paralympic Games in Milan Cortina, the Olympic Village of the former port of Porta Romana will change its destination. The structure that hosted the athletes will become the largest student residence in Italy, an urban reuse intervention thought from the design stage to leave a concrete legacy to the city.
The target? Transfer the spirit of community, respect and sharing typical of the sports context within a permanent urban and academic dimension.
The Bocconi University, for the academic year 2026-2027, has reserved 730 of the approximately 1,700 total places available in the complex. The priority for these accommodation will be given to the freshmen enrolled in the first year of the three-year undergraduate, jurisprudence and biennial judiciary courses, with the possibility to open any residual places to the students of the following years. The stay will cover the period between the end of August and the end of July. It will not be a renewable accommodation for the second year, but those who reside at the Village will get a preferential lane for future assignments in the other residences of the Athena, such as those of Isonzo, Dubini and Spadolini, which already host about 900 students.
The complex consists of six newly built buildings and two historical industrial buildings recovered. Since the residential part had been designed from the beginning according to its subsequent use, the conversion works will take only about four months from the end of the Paralympics. The main interventions concern the adaptation of the ground floors and the external areas, where services such as study rooms, gyms, restaurants and shops, together with public green spaces designed to facilitate the integration of the new student community in the neighbourhood.
For students outside their home and their families, the availability of an organized accommodation from the moment of arrival aims to reduce the logistic and bureaucratic impact linked to the search for a house on the free market. The structure will allow the freshmen to live a first year of transition protected and integrated in the academic fabric, leaving them the time necessary to orient themselves in the metropolis and identify a definitive settlement for the following years.
