The project for the races between Milan and Munich and between Rome and Munich was presented in InnoTrans, the main international trade fair dedicated to the railway sector, which brings together operators, institutions, companies and stakeholders from all over the world to Berlin. To give the announcement, some days after the start of the races test in Germany and Austria within the phase of international approval, Simone Gorini, general manager of Trenitalia, Michael Peterson, member of the Deutsche Bahn cda for long-distance passenger transport, and Sabine Stock, member of the ÖBB cda. The launch of the connections is planned for the summer of 2027 as a result of the completion of the homologation process of the new trains. The races are taking place on the German railway network, in particular on the Berlin – Munich – Kufstein line. In Austria, Frecciarossa is circulating between Kufstein and Brennero and between Salzburg and Vienna.

“It is for us great satisfaction to bring Frecciarossa to Germany and start, together with Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB, a new phase of our international expansion,” said Gorini. “After being appreciated and chosen in Europe by millions of passengers in France and Spain, Frecciarossa will soon be available also for German and Austrian travellers, offering them the opportunity to discover and experience a new way of travelling, combining comfort, quality and speed. The connections with Monaco – he added – represent a further step in the international growth of Trenitalia and the entire FS Group, and confirm our commitment to bring European passengers the know-how and experience we have developed in Italy in the field of high speed”. The commercial offer includes four connections on the routes Milan – Munich and Rome – Munich. For Milan – Munich, with a travel time of about six and a half hours. The main intermediate stops will be in Brescia, Verona, Rovereto, Trento, Bolzano and Innsbruck. As for Rome – Munich, with a travel time of about eight and a half hours, the main stops will be in Florence, Bologna, Verona, Rovereto, Trento, Bolzano and Innsbruck.

The opening of the base tunnel of Brenner will reduce travel times by about an hour. From December 2028 the complete offer will consist of ten connections between Italy and Germany that will cover the routes between Milan, Rome and Munich and will be extended to Naples and Berlin. The new service will be operated with the Frecciarossa, the high-speed train of Trenitalia, which conforms to the European technical specifications of interoperability. It was also designed and built to travel to Italy and the European railway networks of France, Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium, being able to overcome the differences in electricity supply and signalling of the various countries. With the connections Rome/Milan – Munich – Berlin, Frecciarossa, after France and Spain, will also arrive in Germany, continuing to pursue the goal of the “Metropolitan of Europe” at high speed, connecting the most neurological cities of the Old Continent. The new link will also have an impact on railway connections with other countries, as it will intercept the demand for transport to other destinations, such as Frankfurt and Krakow.
