CAGLIARI (ITALPRESS) – After the record data of tourism in Sardinia 2025, both for number of attendance and for spending in our island, in the first 8 months of 2026 there are further increases both on the front of the expense and arrivals in the three Sardinian airports. The Mastercard data, processed on the basis of the transactions made on physical POS present in Sardinia, recorded an increase of 9.5% of the expenditure in the period between January 1 and August 31, 2026, compared to the same period last year. In addition to the overall increase in expenditure, the other three elements that emerge, with greater evidence are those of catering (22.7%) and food sales (18.7%) that remain the first category of expenditure. Foreign customers generate more than half (50.3%) of spending and Germany contributes 20.8% to foreign spending in Sardinia.
“We take the data on the fall, on the impacts of tourism in the economy of Sardinia. These are the data of the first eight months, they are related to the transactions made on physical posts in the Mastercard circuit and are extremely significant data because they record a more 9% with an important increase especially in the catering sector, which alone represents a fifth of the total spending of tourists in Sardinia, but they record extremely significant data. The first is because they give a real perception of what the impacts are, unlike the sensations that seemed to be oriented towards a callo of consumption this year in Sardinia”.
“In the face of an increase in attendance, which we will then record at the end of the year which it really will be, there is also an increase in expenditure, therefore an important contribution on the Sardinian economy. But it is above all significant that for the first time this year the expenditure of foreigners between January and August, therefore in the first eight months of the year, it exceeded 50%, 50,03%” emphasized the regional Councillor of Tourism, Franco Cuccureddu.
Even in August alone foreigners spent more than 50%, 50.09%, considering that in tourist spending there are also Sardinians who moved within Sardinia, therefore also the internal tourism. The data of the three airports that are more or less in line with an increase of passengers equal to approximately 9% with an extremely significant increase of foreigners especially in the airport of Alghero that registers more than 50% in more than foreign passengers.
But they are all extremely positive and the balance compared to the previous period, then to January-August of 2025, is of over 700 thousand extra passengers. So this makes us think that after the year record for tourism in Sardinia also the 2026 will be an extremely positive year. If the first 4 months of the year have made a substantially online tourist spending, with that (record) of 2025, from May to August the increase has become very marked.
On the total expenditure, foreigners affect 50.3% (50.9% in August), Sardinians for 28.5% (22.7% in August) and the rest of Italians for 21.3% (26.4% in August).
