ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The resignation of Iranian Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad is not random, but it takes place under the pressure of the ongoing war for seven months between Iran and the United States on the country’s economy. This is the analysis of the TV at Arabiya according to which, the exit of the minister follows a rare warning launched by the national security adviser Mohsen Rezaei, almost entirely ignored by the Iranian official media, except the Irna agency.
The latter was limited to reporting that Rezaei, during a high-level government meeting held last Saturday in Tehran, defined the current situation “among the most difficult periods faced by the country”. The meeting was attended by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and several prominent ministers, according to the New York Times. Pezeshkian recognized the deterioration of economic conditions in a post on social Saturday, stating that the government “has adopted a new approach to managing exceptional circumstances.” However, it has not provided details on the nature of this approach or on the concrete measures it intends to take.
From the beginning of the conflict between Tehran and Washington, on February 28, the Iranian rial suffered a strong depreciation, accelerated in recent weeks with the insistence of American sanctions and the continuation of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports. This has increased the costs of imports and aggravated the crisis of the cost of life, already chronic for years and at the origin of the wide protests of last December, then repressed by the security forces. According to analysts, the American naval blockade significantly limited Iran’s ability to export oil, the main source of state revenue, aggravating the fuel crisis within the country.
To this are added the restrictions imposed by the United States on most civil flights between Iran and the rest of the world, which emphasize economic isolation. In the last few days employed in the public and private sector, including nurses and teachers, they announced on social media that they would leave work because salaries are not enough to cover expenses. Local averages also refer to public sector pensioners protests in recent weeks, which report that they have not received full pension allowances.
