ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Sogin has awarded the German company GNS the contract for the supply of five special high-strength metal shielding containers, called cask, of the CASTOR HAW28M series. This contract, of the value of approximately 32 million euros, signed on 31 August last, is part of the activities previewed from the program of return of the residues deriving from the reprocessing of the Italian irradiated nuclear fuel sent in recent years in the reprocessing plants of La Hague (France) and Sellafield (United Kingdom).
These casks, each about 5 meters tall, with a diameter of 2,5 meters and a weight of 115 tons, are in accordance with the regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), respecting the criteria of acceptance of the plants of La Hague and Sellafield and are already in use for the same purpose in Germany and Switzerland.
