University scholarships for high sports merits

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – With the publication of the notice “Fondo sport per studenti universitari”, the Government gives concrete implementation to the commitment assumed in 2022 to establish scholarships for sports merits. The measure is provided by the decree signed by the Minister for Sport and Young Andrea Abodi and the Minister of the University and Research Anna Maria Bernini and is intended for university students who practice high-level sports. The Fund has 9.820.978 euros for 2026. In addition to these resources, EUR 4 million is allocated by the Ministry of University and Research for 2027. The overall budget for the initiative goes up to approximately 14 million euros, to support university students who support the academic path an agonistic activity of national importance. The intervention makes the right to study concrete even for those engaged in high-level sport and allows to reconcile university training and sports activities without having to give up one of the two paths. “The merit… deserves opportunities, much more when combining with the right to study and sport, pillars on which we want to build the future of our nation”, says the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi.

“With this measure dedicated to scholarships that strengthen the alliance between universities and sports, we give concrete implementation to another commitment assumed before the Italians by President Giorgia Meloni in 2022. We have received from citizens a mandate to transform what is promised into real choices and opportunities, which we are continuing to realize. With this spirit we support girls and boys who, next to the university, practice high-level sports, so that they can cultivate both their talents without being forced to sacrifice a part of their future. I thank the President of the Council Giorgia Meloni, who believed and committed himself in the first person to achieve this goal, and my colleague Anna Maria Bernini for this further opportunity of valuable collaboration. After the regulation of the athlete student and the dual career, after the Study Fund that allows young people to access funding largely guaranteed by the state to pay university costs, masters and training courses, with scholarships for sportsmen, another concrete result of the government in favor of youth and merit,” concludes Abodi.

“To study and practice high-level sports – says the Minister of the University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini – must not be alternative paths. With this measure we want to concretely support the students-athletes, recognizing the value of the commitment and discipline they express every day within the university and in the fields of competition. Investing on them means making the right to study more inclusive and giving girls and boys the opportunity to build their future without being forced to choose between training and agonistic activity“. Scholarships are addressed to students enrolled in the academic year 2025/2026 in state universities and institutions of the High artistic, musical and choreutical education (AFAM), provided they belong to family groups with an ISEE university not exceeding 40 thousand euros. The amounts of the grants are aligned with those provided for by the national system of the right to university study and amount to more than 7 thousand euros for students out of office, to approximately 4.150 euros for commuters and 2.850 euros for students in the office.

To access the benefit it will be necessary to demonstrate the possession of the sporting requirements linked to the agonistic activity of high level, certified by the competent sports bodies. The questions must be submitted through the IT platform of the Department for Sport, starting from 12:00 on 24 September at 12:00 on 26 October, due to the inadmissibility of the application, completing all the fields provided, which will also take care of the formation of the rankings and the assignment of the scholarships.
