Alessandro Impagnatiello, 31, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 29-year-old Giulia Tramontano, who was seven months pregnant with their son Thiago. He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, concealing the body, and non-consensual abortion, with aggravating factors including premeditation. The court also imposed a three-month solitary confinement sentence and awarded 700,000 euros to the victim’s family. The verdict, after two and a half hours of deliberation, was expected by many, as confirmed by Giulia’s father, Franco Tramontano, who remarked, “It was impossible for it to go any other way.”
The reactions to the sentence were varied. Impagnatiello remained stoic throughout the proceedings, showing little emotion except for a slight grimace. In contrast, Giulia’s mother, Loredana Femiano, broke down in tears, leaning on her son Mario for support. Her husband Franco, visibly torn, looked away from the emotional scene, instead focusing on the empty space in the overcrowded courtroom, a space marked only by roses and baby shoes. “For me, it’s nothing,” he later said about the man who killed his daughter.
The trial, which lasted over a year, included painful moments such as the projection of photos of Giulia’s body and a video from the baby shower for Thiago. Impagnatiello, who had confessed to the crime after being confronted by investigators, stabbed Giulia 37 times in their home. He also attempted to poison her over several months and tried to burn her body before hiding it. The family of Giulia, while acknowledging the loss, expressed a desire to continue fighting against gender-based violence, stressing that true change must come from within society.
