MILAN (ITALPRESS) – “We are facing difficult times for a number of causes. Today the context is different, we need collegial decisions. Those with responsibility in Europe must take collegial decisions and then take the voters with them.”
This was said by former prime minister and former ECB President Mario Draghi during the ISPI 2024 Prize awarding ceremony in Milan.
Then responding to a question about when he delivered the famous “Whatever it takes” speech during the sovereign debt crisis, Draghi said at the time “that was leadership to save price stability and why something had to be done. The context at the time was with the reputation of the ECB at an all-time low, with spreads widening and the euro falling. And so a strong phrase was needed. The ECB needed to be perceived as independent. that phrase was a manifestation of independent.”
“The European institutions have the antibodies created with the European treaties to survive a very long history. The Franco-German leadership has weakened, but no others have emerged that can direct Europe toward a common future.”
Draghi continued – There is a leadership vacuum, but we have to be patient and see the results of the general elections in Germany,” he added.
Then referring to the political forces opposed to greater EU integration, Draghi posed a question, “if Europe is going to go more in a nationalist or sovereignist direction, how will it deal with the needs to go down a path where only the integration of certain areas can allow for the qualitative leap that Europe is asking for?”
