ROME (ITALPRESS) – In Lebanon, “the understanding we welcomed a few days ago reiterates, in essence, what was envisaged in 2006 UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which has never been fully implemented. On that basis, although too fragile to affect the root causes of the conflict, tenacious negotiators were able to insert a positive dynamic, including by revitalizing the role of the UNIFIL Mission of the United Nations.” This was said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in his speech at the Farnesina at the States General of Diplomacy, the Conference of Italian Ambassadors around the world. “Diplomacy knows the precious value of small steps. The one taken in Lebanon leads us to hope for Gaza,” the head of state added. “We must finally obtain the immediate release of the Israeli hostages. It is necessary to put an end to the inhumane suffering of the civilian population of the Strip and to be able to get immediate aid there. This means not limiting ourselves to contingent solutions, although valuable in that they save lives.Mediating does not mean giving up ambitious goals. Looking at Palestine, it should be firmly reiterated that, for the Italian Republic, the real prospect for the future lies in the two-state solution. “It is an objective without alternatives, as the ministers from the region who took part in the Mediterranean Dialogues Conference, a valuable forum developed by the Farnesina, not only for dialogue but also for weaving relations and relationships that can contribute to greater understanding, to scenarios for stabilization in such a complex region,” Mattarella stressed. Pursuing the approximate goal of Palestinian statehood means offering the people of the West Bank and Gaza a goal of justice and a convincing prospect of hope for their future, an indispensable condition also for a finally solid guarantee of security for Israel. With similar tenacity it will be necessary to accompany the definition of the state that will arise from the new Syrian situation, both politically and in terms of its humanitarian consequences.”
