Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni chaired a high-level meeting at Palazzo Chigi to address the implementation of the Italy-Albania Migration Protocol. The summit included key government figures, such as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani (joining remotely), Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, Minister for European Affairs and PNRR Tommaso Foti, and Security Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano. The discussions also reflected on a recent Supreme Court ruling clarifying national authority over the designation of safe origin countries.
During the meeting, participants reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing “innovative solutions” to migration issues in collaboration with European Union partners. This approach aligns with the conclusions reached at the European Council on December 19. Prime Minister Meloni emphasized the importance of a united European strategy and highlighted the consensus achieved at a recent meeting co-hosted with the Danish and Dutch Prime Ministers, involving EU states most impacted by migration flows.
The Italy-Albania Protocol represents a key component of Italy’s broader strategy to address migration challenges. The summit reiterated the government’s focus on fostering international cooperation and aligning national policies with EU-level initiatives to ensure effective and sustainable responses to migration.
