Vuitton Cup, Luna Rossa beats American Magic and goes to the final

BARCELONA (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli has solved the structural problems she suffered yesterday, beat American Magic and flew, with the wind in her stern, into the final of the “Louis Vuitton Cup,” where she will face the British Ineos Britannia. In the sea off Barcelona, the Italian boat finally closed the score against the Americans, winning the eighth race of the challenge and ending the series, won 5-3. Virtually without history this eighth round of the semifinals. The Italian AC75, with the Circolo della Vela Sicilia pennant, after a virtually even start, with American Magic slightly ahead, passed the first gate slightly behind. Then, on the first stern side, the boat with Palermo-born Francesco Bruni and Australian Jimmy Spithill at the helm overtook the New York Yacht Club team with a series of winning choices and crosses. From there on, Luna Rossa took the lead, eventually gaining a pass to the final of the Vuitton Cup.
The boat, wanted by entrepreneur Patrizio Bertelli in 1997 and launched in 1999, with Max Sirena as skipper and team director, will therefore be back in action in the Catalan sea, from September 26, against the British Ineos Brittania, in the final act of the competition reserved for challengers, which will be contested in the best of 13 races: whoever reaches seven successes first will win the Louis Vuitton Cup.
For Luna Rossa, it will be the fifth final in the tournament reserved for challengers: the winning team will then face the defender, namely Emirates New Zealand, in the 37th Americàs Cup. The Italian boat has prevailed in the past among challengers on two occasions, in 2000 and 2021 (when it was called the Prada Cup), then losing on both occasions in the America’s Cup to New Zealand. Two other times, on the other hand, Luna Rossa has been stopped in the final of the Vuitton Cup, surrendering both in 2007 and 2013 to the Kiwis, the real “black beast” of Italian sailors, as usual.
