Our top picks for Holiday TV go through Netflix, Apple Tv+ and PBS: a movie, two series and a documentary not to be missed if you’re home at Christmas time.
The Secret Lives of Animals – Documentary, on Apple Tv on December 18.
“Welcome to a world beyond imagination, where fish can fly and lizards walk on water.” It is with these words that British star Hugh Bonneville introduces the delightful BBC Studios Natural History Unit documentary (in 10 parts) for which he is the narrator. The Secret Lives of Animals will introduce us to the most curious, amusing and moving activities of many animal species, and is not to be missed, especially with children.
The Six Triple Eigth – TV movie, on Netflix on December 20.
Kerry Washington (remember her from the cult series Scandal?) stars in this film inspired by an article written by military history scholar Kevin M. Hymel about the only African American female battalion serving in Europe during World War II.
Washington plays a real-life woman, Major Charity Adams, the first African American to become an officer in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. Commanding the 6888th Central Postal Battalion, which was stationed in the UK and then France in 1945, she had to fight not only the Nazis, but also sexism and racism.
The choral cast also includes Susan Sarandon and Oprah Winfrey; the soundtrack includes an original song by Diane Warren sung by H.E.R.
Call the Midwife 2024 Holiday Special – Holiday Special, on PBS on December 25.
A distinctly Christmas theme (finally!) for the two-part special anticipating the fourteenth season of the adorable British series set in the 1950s and 1960s, chronicling the work of a group of midwives in an impoverished area of London.
The 13th season ended with a twist: one of the main characters, Trixie (Helen George), agreed to move to New York to be with her husband. The Christmas special now promises to reunite all the beloved characters.
It is 1969, an amusement park has arrived in the Poplar neighborhood, and residents are preparing for a Christmas carol concert. However, the festive atmosphere at Nonnatus House is marred by the spread of a flu epidemic and news that an escaped prisoner may be hiding in the area.
