Alessandro Giuli Appointed as New Minister of Culture

Alessandro Giuli appointed as new Minister of Culture

As of the evening of Friday, September 6, Alessandro Giuli will assume the role of Minister of Culture, taking over from Gennaro Sangiuliano at the ministry’s headquarters on Via del Collegio Romano. The appointment comes after a period of controversy and speculation surrounding Sangiuliano’s resignation.

Gennaro Sangiuliano’s Resignation Gennaro Sangiuliano, who served as Minister of Culture, submitted his irrevocable resignation following a storm of criticisms and gossip triggered by revelations from Maria Rosaria Boccia, a former consultant. Sangiuliano’s decision led to his immediate replacement by Alessandro Giuli. As reported by Ansa, Giuli officially began his new role late in the afternoon of September 6, with his swearing-in ceremony taking place at 7 PM.

The New Minister Alessandro Giuli, who will turn 49 on September 27, hails from Rome. A seasoned journalist, he served as Deputy Director of “Il Foglio” from 2008 to 2017 before becoming co-director of the same publication. Giuli was appointed President of the MAXXI Foundation by Sangiuliano on November 23, 2022. In his youth, he founded a far-right political-cultural group called “Meridiano Zero,” which was active from 1991 to 1992 before dissolving. President Sergio Mattarella signed Giuli’s appointment decree in conjunction with Sangiuliano’s resignation.

With Giuli’s departure from the MAXXI Foundation, a significant transition is anticipated for the institution’s leadership. It remains to be seen whether the right-wing coalition will continue its influence over the cultural entity or if a compromise between Giorgia Meloni and Roberto Gualtieri will lead to the appointment of a more neutral figure.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the future direction of the MAXXI Foundation and the broader cultural policy under the new Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli.
