PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – The University of Palermo confirms growth in the global academic landscape. According to the official data of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2026 – prestigious ranking published annually by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy – the Sicilian athenaean, reads in a note, “has scaled about 200 global positions, positioning itself in the prestigious 501-600 band worldwide, compared to the 701-800 band occupied in the 2025 edition.” A result that adds to the remarkable progress also recorded in QS – Quacquarelli Symonds rankings (position 801-850) and THE – Times Higher Education (position 501-600). To determine the progression of UniPa is “the net increase in the quality and international prestige of the scientific production of its teachers and researchers”. Analyzing in detail the objective indicators on which the ARWU methodology is based, “it emerges as the decisive factors for this climb have been: the entry among the most cited researchers in the world (HiCi – Highly Cited Researchers). The indicator for researchers with a high scientific impact (selected on the world reference list of Clarivate) has risen to an excellent 7.4 in 2026. This certifies the presence in Palermo of scientists whose discoveries and publications exert a primary influence on the international level; the consolidation in elite journals (N&S – Nature & Science). The score for the scientific articles published in world reference journals, Nature and Science, grew to 5.1 in 2026.”.
The University of Palermo is also distinguished by 10 disciplines of excellence. Of particular importance are the five scientific fields that have been positioned in the top 300 global (fascia 201-300): Mathematics; Water Resources; Agricultural Sciences; Medical Technology; Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Clinical Medicine in the 301-400 range, followed by Earth Sciences, Biological Sciences and Psychology in the 401-500 range.
“This result – underlines the rector of the University of Palermo, Massimo Midiri – represents a significant confirmation of the growth path that the University of Palermo has undertaken in recent years and is also reflected in the results obtained in other important international rankings. In particular, the growth of about 200 positions recorded in the ARWU 2026 attests the strengthening of the impact and international visibility of UniPa research: a recognition that we welcome with great satisfaction and that confirms the solidity of the path undertaken”.
