On May 27, the Capanna Regina Margherita, at 4,554 meters on Punta Gnifetti in the Monte Rosa massif, recorded a temperature of +2.7°C, an astonishing statistic for a refuge where the weather is generally chilly at the end of May, with temperatures far below zero. In average seasonal conditions, highs range from -5 to -7°C, while lows can fall below -10°C. The anomaly had been anticipated in the previous days: on Plateau Rosa, at 3,467 meters, a high of +9.1°C was recorded on May 25, roughly 10 degrees above the seasonal average. Low temperatures remained positive at +0.6°C, around 6-7 degrees above usual. Meteorologists say this is an unusually strong and early heat wave. Summer 2026 arrived almost a month early, with maximum temperatures 7-8 degrees higher than the climatic normal, reaching 35-36 degrees Celsius in central and northern Italy. This alarm bell serves as an addition to the numerous indicators of warming that are already recognized in the Alps, which are regarded as some of the most rapid in the world.

The Mediterranean Sea is among the most polluted in the world. Every year, more than 200 million people visit its shores, and according to WWF estimates, the amount of marine litter might grow by up to 40% during peak season. The basin is currently regarded as a global hotspot for plastic pollution: more than 570,000 tons of plastic enter the Mediterranean each year, equivalent to almost 30,000 bottles each minute. In this context, there is a growing interest in measures that can reduce maritime tourism’s environmental impact. Luxury Sailing, a firm created in Olbia in 2019 as part of the LM Company group and specializing in catamaran cruises, has opted to address one of the most important aspects of living onboard: water and plastic use. To reduce the usage of disposable bottles on cruises, the business designed and implemented a technology that allows drinking water to be created directly on board from seawater. The procedure begins with the extraction and filtering of saltwater, followed by antibacterial treatments with sterilizing and activated carbon filtration to remove odors and organic residue. Water is purified by removing salts, metals, and contaminants. Once purified, it is remineralized with calcium, magnesium, and potassium. It can be supplied straight from the onboard tap, still or sparkling. “Our goal was to address one of the most impactful habits of life on board”, says Lorenzo Tawakol, the founder of Luxury Sailing. “The production of drinkable water on board results in a reduction in plastic, logistics, and bottled transportation, as well as an enhancement of the guest experience”.

The new regulation, the result of an agreement with the Council, introduces the obligation for all dogs and cats held in the EU, including privately owned dogs, to be identified by microchip and registered in interoperable national databases. Sales, breeders and shelters will be four years from the entry into force of the legislation to adapt.

For pet owners who do not expect the sale, the obligation will enter into force after 10 years for dogs and after 15 for cats. The mating between parents and children will be prohibited, between brothers and other consanguinal couplings. It will also be forbidden to breed dogs and cats to give them exaggerated or excessive characteristics that involve significant health risks. New measures include the ban on mutilation of dogs and cats for exhibitions, exhibitions and competitions. It will also be forbidden to bind a dog or cat to an object (binding), unless necessary for medical care, and the use of strode collars or tips without integrated safety mechanisms.

To fill gaps that allow the entry of dogs and cats into the EU as non-commercial pets, and then to be destined after sale, the new legislation also extends to movements of non-commercial animals. Dogs and cats imported from extra countries EU for sale must be equipped with microchips before entering the EU and subsequently registered in a national database. All pet owners entering the EU will be obliged to pre-register their pet with microchips in a database at least five working days before arrival unless it is already registered in a database of a EU country.

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – A new study dedicated to the island of Vulcano introduces an approach that, thanks to artificial intelligence and the integration of satellite data with measures acquired on the ground, can allow to improve the monitoring of the hydrothermal system, that is the set of water, steam and gas present in the underground.

The research, coordinated by the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV) in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Catania, was carried out in the framework of the SAFARI project (An Artificial Intelligence-based StrAtegy For volcAno hazaRd monItoring from space) funded by the Application Dynamic Planet program, and was published in the scientific journal Remoteng Society and Environment.

“The study analysed the data collected between 2016 and 2024, combining temperature information and environmental conditions derived from the VIIRS and Sentinel-2 satellites with the temperature of the fumaroles recorded by the INGV monitoring network in the area of the La Fossa Crater,” explains Francesco Spina, researcher INGV and researcher.

The use of a semi-supervised learning model made it possible to accurately distinguish the different conditions of activity of the hydrothermal system: background, minor crisis and unrest.

“In particular – Gaetana Ganci, researcher INGV and co-author of the study continues – the use of a semi-supervised model based on generative neural networks (SGAN) has allowed to exceed the limited availability of labeled data, due to the rarity of crisis stages. The model, in fact, can learn effectively both with a few data labeled and with a large amount of data not labeled.”.

Generative neural networks (SGAN), in fact, are systems able to recognize different situations even with few examples already classified, taking advantage of the information contained in the unmarked data.

The results show how artificial intelligence applied to satellite data can support volcano monitoring, allowing to analyze over time surface temperature variations and identify changes related to the activity of the hydrothermal system, opening the way to more advanced surveillance systems and early identification of instability signals.

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Among the issues that have taken on increasing centrality in public debate in recent years, “environmental safety” is one of the most significant. It does not only refer to the environmental impact but focuses on the capacity of contemporary societies to preserve the resources on which economic development, quality of life and lands hold depend.
Veolia, a global leader in environmental services, opens a direct dialogue with citizens to define priorities and ensure access to essential services. It is precisely in this perspective that this year, for the first time Veolia participates in the Fuorisalone with Infinity, an interactive installation on ecological safety created by the artist Marco Nereo Rotelli at the State University of Milan, in the Courtyard of Pharmacy, within the exhibition-event INTERNI Materiae.
The compositional arrangement of “Infinity” comes from a collaboration between different disciplines and knowledge. For Rotelli one of the fundamental themes is in fact the disposition of the traditional figure of the artist, which abandons egocentrism to open itself to a collective composition of knowledge. The project involves figures from different fields: the scientist and Nobel Prize Riccardo Valentini with the physicist Valerio Coppola, the poet Valerio Magrelli, the composer Alessio Bertallot and the digital creative Luca Andrea Marazzini.
The work, conceived on the desire for active involvement of citizens, invites visitors to build a story of a more sustainable world thanks to the collective commitment and the setting up of concrete and innovative solutions to address climate challenges. Specifically, each guest can dialogue through the installation on environmental, sustainability and the relationship between man and technology. An artificial intelligence system interprets these inputs and translates them into real time in images and words projected on the bright screens of the installation and on the entire courtyard, giving rise to a constantly evolving visual composition. The work is done together with the Domyn group, which operates on the centrality of the human being in the development of the IA.
“We believe that environmental safety is not only an industrial or technological challenge, but also a central theme that needs reflection and collective commitment. Initiatives such as this allow us to approach people to sustainability issues, showing how infrastructure, innovation and daily life are deeply connected. Veolia in Italy guides the sustainable transition of territories and enterprises through the GreenUp Strategic Plan, with ambitious objectives of decarbonization, reduction of pollution and protection of resources, in a shared path with citizens, associations and institutions, because we are convinced that only through synergies, dialogue and awareness we can build a more sustainable and accessible future for all”, says Emanuela Trentin, CEO of Veolia in Italy.
In this dialogue between art, technology and human dimension, Infinity becomes a shared reflection space: an invitation to confront the relationship between infrastructure, environment and daily life, and the role that everyone can have in building a more sustainable future.
At a time when yesterday’s environmental challenges have become today’s security crises, Veolia develops integrated solutions for sustainable water, waste and energy management, to ensure operational continuity, ensure access to resources and strengthen competitiveness.
In Italy Veolia has been operating for almost a century with 3,300 employees in 150 operating sites, managing more than 13,000 buildings and about 150 industrial sites each year, helping to save more than 131,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Veolia considers it essential to give voice to the needs of citizens and does so also through a continuous survey of the “Barometer of thethe Ecological Transformation” conducted by Elabe for the Group; among the results at the national level of the last edition emerges that 77% of the population feel directly exposed and vulnerable to climate change and that 75% of the Italians believe that the costs of inaction will be, greater than the investments necessary for ecological transformation. In continuity with what emerged, Veolia intends to deepen this need and extend the reflection to visitors of the exhibition-event.

The consultation is open from yesterday, 23 April, until 9 June 2026 and takes place on the platform ParteciPA, where you can consult the materials and send contributions. The initiative is part of the national path already initiated for the definition of the Plan, a key element to counter the loss of biodiversity and strengthen the resilience of ecosystems, in line with national and European objectives.

In line with the principles of transparency and participation, consultation is a fundamental step in collecting contributions from citizens, institutions, territorial authorities, scientific communities and stakeholders. The objective is to integrate the various contributions in the definition of the Plan, ensuring a shared and coherent approach with the specificities of the territories.

We all benefit from it, but its protection has costs, as happens for many basic public services. The real challenge is to find a balance between public and private resources, which does not penalize virtuous and not severe behaviours excessively on the productive sector, avoiding negative effects on the competitiveness of our economies.” So Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister for the Environment and Energy Security, taking part in the session of the work of the Ministerial G7 in Paris dedicated to finance for biodiversity. “We feel very appropriate – said Pichetto – the Alliance between peoples, nature and finance” taken by the French Presidency, “which can represent an important impetus to mobilize new resources, especially from the private and philanthropic sector”. “Today, according to UNEP, only about 10% of funding for nature comes from the private sector. It is evident that it is necessary to do more”, Pichetto explained, highlighting the existence in Italy of positive experiences such as foundations and enterprises, as well as initiatives such as the Global Compact Network Italy, “that help to spread a culture of sustainability in the private sector”.

“We don’t start from scratch,” explained Pichetto, citing “concrete tools such as the Global Framework Fund for Biodiversity, the Kunming Fund and the Cali Fund, all open to private contributions.” “To support these tools – he added – is essential to achieve the overall goal of mobilizing at least $200 billion a year by 2030.” “The biodiversity – concluded Pichetto Fratin – lives in the territories, the local and regional dimension is crucial. Italy is strongly committed to environmental cooperation, such as in the Mediterranean and in the Alps. We hope that the Alliance between peoples, nature and finance also supports territorial initiatives and becomes a replicable model.”.

IL MINISTRO PLAUDE ALL’ISTITUZIONE DI UN’ALLEANZA G7 SULLE AREE MARINE PROTETTE

“Italy welcomes the establishment of a G7 Alliance on Protected Marine Areas”, presented by the French Presidency, because “it strongly believes in the value of multi-level cooperation, as an engine for strengthening and exporting successful models in the issue of effective management”, he explained. “Italy – Pichetto has remembered – has started and financed, within the framework of several bilateral cooperation agreements with the Barcelona Convention, four editions of a twinning program that has involved marine protected areas Italian and southern Mediterranean, in particular Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco”. This programme, the Minister added, “has contributed to the definition of real action plans in North Africa’s protected marine areas.”.

Pichetto Fratin also expressed the conviction that “the G7 Alliance on protected marine areas can also contribute to facilitating” the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement on marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, which “cannot ignore the constant dialogue with international and regional organizations already active in this area.” The Minister also tackled the issue of the fight against illegal fishing, which “Italy reiterates the firm opposition”, for “the devastating impact on our marine ecosystems” and is convinced “of the need to strengthen political awareness regarding the urgent implementation of existing regulatory agreements and frameworks on this subject.” “Italy is committed to ensuring the implementation of global objectives and – concluded by the Minister – welcomes the initiative of the Presidency which attaches to the G7 an incisive role in this regard, contributing to the strengthening of political awareness and the smoothest achievement of the objectives.”.

Because the battle for the environment is not neutral: it is a cultural battle and, like all cultural battles, requires vision, commitment, pragmatism.” This is what the President of the Council writes, Giorgia Meloni, in the preface of the book of the MEP of Fdi, Nicola Procaccini, “The Ecology of Conservatives”.

“There is no more convinced ecologist than a conservative – Meloni observes – because the word ‘ecology’ comes from that Greek oikos, meaning ‘house’. It is the reason why, for the conservatives of every latitude, the house is synonymous with Patria, is the place that guards the family, the pillar on which the common destiny that binds us is based”.

The premier emphasizes: “The conservatives protect Europe’s classical and Christian roots, defend life, believe in the family as the fundamental core of society, want to build a Europe based on the freedom and sovereignty of nations, protect the work and the real economy, defend the environment without ideology. Because it is not possible to protect the environment without the work responsible for man.”.

Meloni recalls “the political and cultural proposal supported by the Italian conservatives, an ecology that arises from respect and awareness that the human being is not the master of Creation, but its custodian. That holds together development and protection, innovation and tradition, freedom and responsibility. That does not claim to rewrite man and nature according to abstract patterns. That does not impose unnecessary sacrifices, but promotes conscious choices. And that is not based on fear, but on common sense and reality.”.

TORINO (ITALPRESS) – Telling a new culture of green, able to value the investments of the PNRR and strengthen the link between the environment and the Turin community: this is the heart of Reforestation, the initiative aimed at promoting and disseminating the good practices of the Investment “Tutela e valorization del verde urban e extraurbano” that falls within mission 2 of the PNRR. Promoted by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, with the support of Axpo Italia and Pulsee Luce and Gas, he made a new stop in Turin, in the presence of local institutions, environmental experts, academics and representatives of the promoting realities. A moment of discussion dedicated to the role of metropolitan cities in the development of nature-based solutions and in the dissemination of sustainable regeneration models, in line with the European strategy for forests at 2030. Turin has developed a strong link with its green heritage over 320 km of tree-lined avenues and a widespread system of urban and suburban parks represent a significant example of integration between nature and anthropized spaces. In this regard, the Piedmontese capital has joined the international “Tree Cities of the World” programme, jointly organized by the FAO and the Arbor Day Foundation, which rewards cities using urban forestry to improve the sustainability and viability of their territory. 93% of citizens recognize the importance of green areas for their psychophysical well-being, while 84% are satisfied with their accessibility. This sensitivity also extends to the environmental dimension: 89% of the Turinese identify in green an effective tool to counter the effects of climate change, while 91% emphasise the importance of being able to have green spaces near the places of life and work. Green also assumes an identity value: for 93% of citizens contribute to defining the character of the city and, for 85%, requalification interventions would positively affect the overall judgement against the administration. Finally, the theme of the extension of green surfaces remains central, indicated as a priority by three torinese on four. The investment “Tutela e valorization del verde urban e extraurbano”, part of Mission 2 of the PNRR – “Rivoluzione verde e transition ecological”, Component “Tutela del territorio e della resource water” – is part of this context of increasing interest in environmental quality. With a total budget of 210 million euros, the programme provides for the establishment of 4.5 million trees and shrubs on a national scale, the construction of 4,500 hectares of new forests, contributing to the preservation of ecosystems and the improvement of environmental conditions in 14 Metropolitan Cities. The interventions are included in the Ecoregione del Bacino Occidentale del Po, a territory characterized by the presence of rivers and channels and subject to critical issues related to intensive agriculture, drought and water pollution. In this area, the reduction of share forests has increased the risk of erosion and loss of biodiversity. The planned actions aim to strengthen ecological resilience through the planting of more than 700,000 trees with 8 projects in Turin, with species such as betulles, poplars, willows and alders that will be placed along the waterways, contributing to the stabilization of the banks and the improvement of water quality. Querce and ash will instead be used to reduce erosion in agricultural areas, while shrubs such as leech, prugnolo and hazelnut will favour biodiversity and s protectionhole. In the specific area of the Metropolitan City of Turin, the target for the year 2022 was exceeded while, for the year 2023-2024 (expired in 2026), the objective was completed to 75%. Axpo Italia and Pulsee Luce e Gas, a company offering energy solutions for businesses and domestic customers, contribute to the Reforestation initiative through activities aimed at communication and enhancement of the project, as well as the development of digital monitoring tools for reforestation actions. In this area the Riforestazioneitalia.it platform, created by the urban-tech company SuperUrbanity, which represents a centralized access point to consult information, deepen the interventions and follow the evolution of the activities of requalification of the green heritage on a national scale. At the same time, Reforestation promotes the active involvement of new generations, recognized as protagonists of sustainable change. The initiative includes training courses with selected Italian universities and the call for ideas “Pianta Un Idea”, the project, aimed at young people between 18 and 30 years, with the aim of gathering concrete proposals for environmental protection and regeneration of green. In his video interview, Minister for the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin commented: “The reforestation project conducted through the PNRR has brought a tangible result from the great environmental significance for the Metropolitan Cities involved, including of course our Turin. From the beginning – he has emphasized – we have undertaken this work with great technical-scientific care, availing us of the contribution of the Carabinieri’s Arma to plant species consistent with the characteristics of the territories. The protection of forest heritage as part of our national biodiversity strategy at 2030 is a major priority of this Ministry that we carry on several levels. National, European and global level. It is a continuous effort of cultural and educational order that needs technical-scientific approach and together of exhibition simplicity, with a strong sharing of intent.”“Reforestation” was born to valorize the measure of the PNRR dedicated to the protection and strengthening of urban green – said Fabrizio Penna, Head of Mission Unit for the PNRR of the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security -. In the Metropolitan City of Turin, in a context with a strong industrial vocation, the project takes on a particularly important meaning, demonstrating the possibility of combining economic development, environmental sustainability and quality of life. Interventions aim to strengthen urban biodiversity, improve the quality of the environment and contribute concretely to adaptation to climate change. The increase in green areas and the abomination of new arboreal and shrub species make urban spaces more vivable and welcoming, improve air quality and contribute to contrasting waves of heat, pollution and soil consumption. It is an investment that produces immediate and lasting benefits for citizens, increasing comfort, usability of spaces and resilience of the territory. Finally, the project promotes a shared vision of green care, involving local institutions and bodies in a common commitment to more sustainable and viable cities.” Francesco Tresso, Councillor for Public Green and Fiumi of the City of Turin, added that “the urban foresting activities promoted by MASE thanks to PNRR funding are a concrete opportunity to strengthen biodiversity and counteract air pollution and the effects of climate change. Intervention along the river areas and in particular, in the territory of the western basin of the Po, means not only increase the verdant heritageand the Metropolitan City of Turin, but also stabilize the banks and make the ecosystems more resilient. The forest project contributes to the restoration of ecological corridors and the redevelopment of urban and extra-urban areas, with tangible benefits for the environment and health. An investment that effectively improves the quality of life of citizens.” “Reforestation” was born with the aim of accompanying a cultural transformation that puts green and the environment at the center of the development of cities. Turin is a particularly significant example in this sense, thanks to its historical attention to the arboreal heritage and the ability to integrate it into the urban fabric, making it a distinctive feature of its identity. This initiative allows us to contribute to greater collective awareness, enhancing the role of green as a strategic infrastructure for the welfare of the community”, said Alicia Lubrani, CEO of Pulsee Luce and Gas and CMO of Axpo Italy. The appointment of Turin continues the path of Reforestation in the main Italian cities, bringing to public attention a concrete reflection on how development and sustainability can be combined in a long-term vision.

The materials collected will be subsequently processed and catalogued by scientists and volunteers. Bioparco will make its contribution with the organization of the guided tours entitled “The biodiversity around us” with the primary objective of spreading the culture of environmental protection. The day takes place with the patronage of Banca del Fucino that from 2025 is alongside Bioparco as a supporter. The commitment of the Bank of Fucino is divided into several initiatives: from support to specific areas from the Park, to remote adoption of animal species, to, precisely, the patronage to special days and public awareness initiatives on the issues of biodiversity, environmental education and the protection of ecosystems. The urban safari, scheduled on Sunday 26 April, will take place in the 17 hectares of Bioparco in the company of naturalistic guides. An opportunity to observe and learn more about the animals that populate the city and that it is possible to meet in the park: from birds, like crows, seagulls, parrots, royal Germans, to small mammals such as squirrels, to insects and butterflies. The guided tours, included in the cost of the Bioparco ticket, will take place from 10.30 to 15.15 and will last an hour; the reservation takes place the same day at the entrance. City Nature Challenge is a Citizen Science event on Urban Biodiversity, conceived in 2016 by the Los Angeles Natural History Museum and the California Academy of Sciences (USA) and which has become an international event since 2018. Last year in the Metropolitan City of Rome the total observations were 11.667, relating to 2,075 identified species, reported by 494 observer citizens. As the number of observers involved, the city of Rome reached 6th position in Europe and 48th in the world.
