Cecilia Sala: Uncertain Release Timeline for Italian Journalist Detained in Iran

Tajani noted that predicting the timing of Sala's release is challenging due to the delicate nature of negotiations

Cecilia Sala, the Italian journalist arrested in Iran, faces an uncertain timeline for her release as the charges against her remain unknown. Speaking on the program Zona Bianca, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that Sala has been in isolation at Evin Prison for over ten days, highlighting the complexity of the situation. The U.S. government has also intervened, labeling her arrest as “unjustified” and calling for her immediate release.

Tajani noted that predicting the timing of Sala’s release is challenging due to the delicate nature of negotiations, which are complicated and do not solely depend on the Italian authorities. He emphasized that the situation requires discretion and care, stating, “We are doing everything possible to ensure a quick resolution, but the circumstances are quite complicated.” He also confirmed that no formal charges have been made against Sala, although there has been some positive indication regarding her treatment as a detainee.

The U.S. State Department has condemned Sala’s arrest, linking it to the recent detention of an Iranian citizen in Italy for drone component smuggling. A spokesperson reiterated the call for the immediate and unconditional release of all arbitrarily detained prisoners in Iran. They emphasized that journalists play a crucial role in informing the public, often under dangerous conditions, and deserve protection. The spokesperson also highlighted the threat posed by Iran’s advanced drone technology and its support for violent proxy groups, reiterating the U.S. commitment to countering destabilizing actions in the region.
