The Consulate General of Italy in New York, in collaboration with Rai – Italy’s national public broadcasting company – hosted a special event at the prestigious Park Avenue 690 location. The occasion marked the celebration of 100 years of Italian radio and 70 years of Italian television, in partnership with Rai Teche (the archives division) and Rai Fiction, with the support of the Mike Bongiorno Foundation.
The evening began with an opening speech from the Consul General, Fabrizio Di Michele, who welcomed the guests and read a message from the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella. This was followed by formal greetings from Licia Ronzulli, Vice President of the Italian Senate, and Giorgio Mulè, Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, both of whom were present for the event.
This was the only celebration of both milestones for Italian radio and television to take place outside of Italy. As noted in President Mattarella’s message, “celebrating in New York the centenary of the first broadcast by the Italian Radio Union and the 70th anniversary of Rai’s first television broadcast carries special meaning,” highlighting how Italian radio and television have provided a “precious link to our citizens abroad and their descendants, strengthening their cultural roots.”
Curated by Marco Giudici, a senior advisor at the Italian Academy of Columbia University, the event took the audience on a journey through Italy’s broadcasting history. Rare footage and audio clips showcased some of Rai’s most iconic programs and moments. A special tribute was paid to Mike Bongiorno, a legendary figure in Italian broadcasting, who started his career in New York and became a bridge between Italy and the United States.
Guiding the audience through this historical journey was Professor Umberto Broccoli, an archaeologist, writer, and prominent radio and television host. The evening also featured a preview of the upcoming Rai television series “Mike,” which premieres on Rai Uno on October 21st. The preview was introduced by Mike Bongiorno’s son, Nicolò Bongiorno, who is the President of the Mike Bongiorno Foundation.
The event was made possible with the media partnership of Askanews, whose director, Gianni Todini, highlighted the agency’s agreement with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide news coverage for Italians abroad. Additionally, La Voce di New York and Ciao USA TV ensured the event was live-streamed for audiences worldwide.
This celebration brought Italian media history to life in one of the world’s greatest cities, underscoring the enduring bond between Italy and its global community.
