European Parliament Delegation in Upper Adriatic to assess the environmental challenges of the Po Delta and the needs of local fishermen

BRUSSELS (BELGIO) (ITALPRESS) – From 21 to 23 September, the Euro MPs of the Fisheries Committee will be in Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Marche to assess the needs of local fishing communities. MEPs will begin their visit with a visit to the fish market in Chioggia, followed by a meeting with local fishermen’s associations, the undersecretary of MASAF (Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests) Patrizio Giacomo La Pietra, Mayor Mauro Armelao and regional authorities, with whom they will discuss fishing in the northern Adriatic and the environmental challenges of the delta delta delta delta delta delta delta delta delta delta delta delta delta delta delta delta delta delta, the largest national reserve. The second day will be dedicated to visits and meetings with fisherman producers and cooperatives of the Sacca degli Scardovari, Cesenatico and Goro, where the delegation will visit a blue crab processing plant. He will then move to Ancona, where he will meet representatives of molluscs breeders and strascist fishermen. In the last day, the members will meet with the mayor of Ancona, Daniele Silvetti, and the local authorities, and then attend a presentation on the fisheries economy and participate in a confrontation with the stakeholders in the Council Hall of the City Council.

In view of the visit, the head delegation Isabelle Le Callennec (PPE, FR) said: “The Upper Adriatic is one of the most productive marine basins in Europe, but also one of the most fragile. Today the fishing communities are paying a very high price due to the emergence of blue crab and the dizzying increase in fuel costs. To these pressures are added the new challenges related to climate change and geopolitical tensions, which require rapid and targeted responses, fully adapted to local socio-economic realities. This visit allows us to see closely the challenges that the industry faces. The fishermen of the Adriatic, such as those of the whole EU, need quick and effective tools to protect their livelihood; we will bring their voice directly to Brussels, transforming knowledge of their needs into concrete actions.”.

Fishing in the Upper Adriatic is strongly focused on small pelagic species, such as anchovies and sardines, managed through regional cooperation and sustainability paintings. Fishing continues to be a pillar of the local economy of Chioggia, home to the largest fish market in the Adriatic. Mitiliculture and clam fishing also contribute to the local economy, but the sector today faces new challenges related to the blue Atlantic crab, an invasive species that in recent years has damaged the breeding of mussels. Ancona is one of the most important fishing ports in Italy. Although it does not have more boats, it is an important pole for tonnage and landing. The port is an integral part of the maritime identity of the city, as the dishes of the local tradition testify.
