ROMA (ITALPRESS) – This summer full cost Italians up to 1,8 billion euros more than July and August last year. An attack that weighed on the budgets of families in the two central months of the holidays, affecting mobility and tourist consumption. It is the estimate of the Confesercenti Economic Office, drawn up at equal consumption on the basis of MIMIT data and with the findings of August almost definitive: overall, in July and August 2026 the motorists supported an expenditure for supplies of more than 21% compared to the same months of 2025. The comparison with a year ago gives the measure of the increase.
In summer 2025 gasoline stood at around 1,70 euros per liter and diesel at 1,63 euros. In August 2026 the average travels around 2 euros for gasoline and beyond this threshold for diesel. The last MIMIT survey of 23 August, on the road network in self mode, indicates 2,010 euros per liter for gasoline and 2.130 for diesel. Translated in a 50 litre full, it means about 14 euros more than a year ago for a gasoline car and over 20 euros more for a diesel.
The acceleration concentrated in a few weeks. Since July 4, with the excise excise duty excise duty excise duty, the pump prices have grown again as the break between Iran and the United States reported the Hormuz Strait at the centre of international tensions on the crude oil. Since then gasoline has increased by 10.8% and diesel by 12.4%, without the subsequent fluctuations having produced a real trend reversal.
The only effect of this climb is approximately 780 million euros in the two months. Without public intervention, the account for motorists would have been even heavier. In July and August alone, the cut of excise duties reduced the supply costs of approximately 300 million euros. A benefit concentrated above all on oil: for most of July, in fact, the reduction was not operational and, when it was reintroduced from 28 July, it concerned only diesel, with a discount of 17 cents per liter.
In the absence of the measure, a full 50 liters would cost approximately 8,50 euros more. Gasoline, on the other hand, from the beginning of July has never returned to the perimeter of the intervention. The forecast for a further extension is certainly useful: in the absence of new resources, the 17 cents would therefore be to weigh entirely on the price to the pump just in the middle of the counterexodus and on the eve of September, month in which at least 15 million tourists are expected and that continues to represent an important phase of the season.
“The dear carburetors can no longer be faced with short-term measures and limited effectiveness,” says Confesercenti president Nico Gronchi. “The protracts of international tensions, and therefore of a phase of high volatility of energy prices, cannot unfortunately be excluded. The levels reached today at the gasoline and diesel pump are already likely to penalize the tourist season of September and, above all, to move on the entire economy, feeding new inflationary pressures – a front to pay particular attention this fall. For this reason, it serves a targeted and structural intervention on the taxation of fuels and energy, able to attenuate the shocks and to avoid that the relapses are chained on enterprises, families and consumption”.
