General Strike Shuts Down Key Industries Across Italy

CGIL and UIL Protest Budget Law with Widespread Worker Participation

Today’s general strike, organized by CGIL and UIL against the proposed budget law, saw significant participation across public and private sectors, sparing only rail transport following last weekend’s disruptions. Early data from the unions indicate that numerous companies experienced complete shutdowns, including major players like Heineken in Taranto, Sammontana in Florence, Citterio in Parma, Lagostina in Novara, and Dana in Reggio Emilia. Additionally, all temporary workers at the Beko plant in Varese joined the strike.

Worker turnout was impressive nationwide: 85% participation was reported at Ferrarelle in Valle Camonica, Lavazza in Vercelli, Beltrame Steelworks in Vicenza, Liguria’s Coop and IperCoop stores, and the Carrefour in Carugate, Milan. Other strongholds included 80% at Siemens in Trento and Leonardo in Pomigliano d’Arco, 98% among temporary workers at Lamborghini in Bologna, and 90% at Ikea in Genoa, Pirelli in Settimo Torinese, and Fincantieri in Castellammare di Stabia.

Similarly, high turnout was recorded at Poltrona Frau in Macerata, Italcementi in Brescia, and Fincantieri in Palermo (75%); and at Isab in Syracuse (95%). These figures underscore widespread dissatisfaction among workers as unions demand revisions to the budget, citing insufficient support for labor rights and social welfare measures. The strike highlights growing tension between Italy’s workforce and government policies.
