It ends the Gravina era, flops and scandals behind earthquakes in Figc

by Giorgio La Bruzzo

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Those of Giancarlo Abete and Carlo Tavecchio, cited also by the Minister of Sport Abodi, were the most recent cases but already in the past the results of the field had juggling conditioned the games in Federcalcio. And not only. Earthquakes and twists are not lacking in federal history, since its dawns. Luigi Bozino’s name probably says nothing to many but in November 1923 he was forced to resign as president of Figc for one of the very first scandals of Italian football, the passage of Gustavo Gay from Pro Vercelli (of which Bozino was also the chief executive) to Milan, with an escamotage that violated the rules of the time. Earlier the case of Carlo Montù, who resigned due to the differences in Italy’s participation in the Olympic tournament in Antwerp 1920. But, as mentioned, the field commands and thus the first failure to qualify for a World Championship, that of 1958, leads to the commissioning of the Federcalcio: via Ottorino Barassi, helmsman to the then Secretary General of the Coni, Bruno Zauli, who will carry on a series of important reforms, establishing what are now the League Pro and the LND and creating the technical sector for the formation of coaches, in addition to the youth sector that will become in the 1980s.

Another flop that at the World Championships in Mexico in 1986, with the blue world champions eliminated in the eighth: Federico Sordillo, the one who reopened the borders to foreigners at the beginning of the eighties and obtained the organization of Italy ’90, resigned, resulting in commissioning of the Federation. In the saddle Franco Carraro, who twenty years later will take a step back in front of the scandal of Calciopoli, with Guido Rossi who settled in Via Allegri. And we arrive at the present day: in 2014 in Brazil – in what remains the last appearance of Italy in a World Championship – the exit in the group stage brings the number one federal Giancarlo Abete and the ct Prandelli to put back their respective mandates, three years after the same fate will touch his successor Carlo Tavecchio, this time because the National Team at the World does not suit us, made out of Sweden in the shoots. Now Gravina that in the immediate post-race of Zenica gives the impression of being able and wanting to resist but that in the end can do nothing but free the desk: three editions of the World Cup without Italy are really too many.
