Martina Voce, a 21-year-old student from Florence, is recovering in a stable condition at an Oslo hospital after narrowly surviving an attempted murder by her ex-boyfriend, Mohit Kumar, a 20-year-old Indian IT specialist. The attack, which occurred in the Vulkan neighborhood where Martina worked, left her with multiple stab wounds, including a life-threatening injury to her neck. Her family has traveled to Norway to support her through her recovery, which will require additional reconstructive surgeries.
The incident unfolded Friday at “Smak av Italia,” a specialty Italian store where Martina worked as a manager. Kumar entered the shop without warning and immediately launched the assault, inflicting several stab wounds before Martina’s cries alerted her coworkers. One of them managed to disarm Kumar during a struggle and stabbed him in self-defense, leaving him critically injured. Both Martina and her attacker were rushed to the hospital, where Kumar remains in a medically induced coma under police custody.
Martina had ended the couple’s two-year relationship in September, but Kumar reportedly began stalking her afterward, bombarding her with messages and calls. The attack was described by witnesses as a frenzied and premeditated act. Oslo police confirmed that Martina’s coworker, initially arrested for intervening, was released without charges, as his actions were deemed necessary to save her life.
The Italian Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the attack, citing its jurisdiction over Italian nationals abroad. Meanwhile, Martina remains under intensive care, having already undergone two surgeries, including a seven-hour procedure to repair damage to her jugular vein. Her condition, while serious, is no longer life-threatening. As her family and coworkers rally around her, Norwegian authorities praise the bravery of the employees who intervened, crediting them with preventing a tragic loss of life.
