Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa

Italy remembers Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa: a legacy of courage and justice

Forty-two years ago, a brutal mafia attack tragically ended the life and career of Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa. The assault, which also claimed the lives of his wife Emanuela Setti Carraro and officer Domenico Russo, who died days later from his injuries, marked one of the darkest chapters in the organized crime’s assault on civil society. President Sergio Mattarella reflected on this somber anniversary, emphasizing that the heinous act did not diminish the commitment to the values of legality and justice championed by Dalla Chiesa throughout his distinguished career.

President Mattarella praised Dalla Chiesa’s enduring influence, noting that his fight against terrorism and mafia brutality continues to inspire public officials, civil society, and the younger generations. “His legacy lives on in the efforts of those who actively combat mafia and terrorism,” Mattarella stated, calling for a renewed commitment to courage and responsibility in facing organized crime.

The President underscored the importance of vigilance across various sectors, including the judiciary, law enforcement, public administration, and the business world. He highlighted the need for a widespread culture of legality, rejecting any compromise with mafia mentality. Mattarella concluded by extending heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the families of Dalla Chiesa, Setti Carraro, and Russo, reaffirming the Republic’s commitment to upholding their values.
