ROME (ITALPRESS) – “The centrality of the person, the one that makes us realize that the sick person is not only entitled to care if there are prospects of recovery, but until the extreme moment is the heart, value and meaning of the medical profession. It is an indication that our regulatory framework has taken up and that introduces palliative care in its own right in a scientific capacity, removing it from the widespread belief that it was only a compassionate activity, of solidarity, of support in accompanying the patient.” Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, receiving a representation of the palliative care world at the Quirinale. “This regulatory framework places us among the most advanced countries but it poses a need, as does every law, that of its implementation. Implementation has taken place, it has grown but it is not totally implemented and it requires as predictable a constant growth of implementation,” he added. This, Mattarella emphasized, “with some objectives: that of territorial homogeneity in our country, where there are appreciable differences on the practicability and performance of palliative care; that of training, which requires urging; and that of scientific research. I, of course, have no operational duties, but I will convey these urgings to the government so that a vigorous push to advance palliative care will be further urged. Every palliative care intervention also translates into a message about powerlessness and the need for them to enter fully into the framework of medical services that must be provided. In the complexity of palliative care, there is a competition of professionalism, dedication and even human vision that contributes to one of the most civilized sectors of our society,” the head of state concluded.(ITALPRESS).-Photo: Quirinale-
