Mattarella’s Strong Stance on Trade Tariffs and Global Cooperation
In a response to concerns about tariffs raised by U.S. President Donald Trump, President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the importance of open markets and international cooperation. Speaking at the “Agricoltura è” village inauguration, Mattarella criticized tariffs as harmful to trade, distorting markets and penalizing quality products in favor of inferior ones. He stressed that market barriers undermine trust and international collaboration, which are vital for global peace. Highlighting Europe’s economic strength, Mattarella called for a determined, calm approach to ensure market openness, aligning with the European Union’s position. He described trade wars as dangerous conflicts, urging the importance of fair, rule-based trade for global prosperity, stressing that the World Trade Organization plays a crucial role in fostering a fairer global market system.
Teachers Criticize Ministry’s National Guidelines Survey for Schools
On March 20th, the Italian Ministry of Education sent a questionnaire to school leaders regarding new national guidelines for 2026-2027, which teachers argue is biased. The guidelines, which replace previous educational programs, have been met with criticism for their traditional approach. The questionnaire contains multiple-choice questions on the clarity and structure of the guidelines but lacks options for negative feedback, leaving little space for teachers to express concerns. Critics, including educators and organizations like CRESPI, argue that the survey is more of a formality than a genuine consultation. The lack of openness to critical feedback has raised suspicions that the results will be used propagandistically to show widespread approval. While some teachers have voiced their opposition, the Ministry continues to push the guidelines despite the backlash.
Unusual Inspections for Tankers After Explosion of Seajewel
Following the explosion that damaged the Seajewel oil tanker in Vado Ligure in February, the port authority of Savona has initiated unusual inspections for tankers in the area. Around ten vessels have been inspected, focusing on the submerged parts of their hulls to ensure integrity. The inspections are in response to the incident involving the Seajewel, where two explosive devices were attached to its hull, causing significant damage. While not all tankers are inspected, those that are undergo a rigorous process involving remote-operated vehicles to scan for potential threats. The attack on Seajewel, believed to involve a diving team planting explosives, has led to heightened security measures and ongoing investigations into possible links to the war in Ukraine and Russian oil sanctions.
Death After Liposuction Leads to Investigation of Surgeons in Rome
A 62-year-old woman, Simonetta Kalfus, passed away on March 18th in Rome due to complications from a severe infection, following a liposuction procedure on March 6th. Kalfus had undergone the surgery, recommended by a friend and anesthetist, Francesco Iandimarino, and performed by cosmetic surgeon Carlo Bravi. After the procedure, Kalfus experienced severe symptoms and was treated at home by the doctors. Despite several visits and IV treatments, her condition worsened, leading to a coma and eventual death. An autopsy confirmed the cause as an embolism due to a widespread infection. The investigation, prompted by her daughter’s complaint, involves three doctors—Francesco Iandimarino, Carlo Bravi, and Eleonora Valletta—suspected of manslaughter, aiding and abetting, and failing to provide assistance. Bravi, already under investigation for previous malpractice, faces further scrutiny after prior health code violations were discovered in his clinic. The case highlights concerns over the quality of medical practices and the safety of cosmetic surgeries.
