Palermo Group Rape Case: Six Defendants Convicted in First Degree

Severe Sentences for Perpetrators of 2023 Attack; Victim to Receive Compensation

All six adult defendants in the gang rape case that occurred between July 6 and 7, 2023, in Palermo have been convicted in the first degree. Four of them received seven-year sentences, one was sentenced to six years and four months, and the final defendant received a four-year sentence. Additionally, the men were ordered to pay a provisional compensation of €40,000 to the victim, pending a civil judge’s decision on the final amount. The prosecution had requested sentences ranging from 10 to 12 years, but the court recognized mitigating circumstances. A seventh defendant, the only minor at the time, was sentenced in March to 8 years and 8 months in prison, a decision upheld in appeal last month.

The attack took place at an abandoned construction site on the Foro Italico, along Palermo’s waterfront. It gained significant attention, partly due to the apparent indifference of the perpetrators, revealed through testimonies, wiretaps, and surveillance footage. The convicted individuals are between 18 and 23 years old.
