Parliament adopts proposals on safe online environment for children

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The European Parliament calls for new measures to ensure a safer digital environment for young people, involving online platforms, Member States, European Commission, families and schools. The resolution was adopted with 395 votes in favour, 136 against and 80 abstentions. Euro MPs recognise the opportunities offered by digital learning and creativity, but also call for risks related to social addiction, cyberbullying and possible effects on mental health. This is why they call for greater responsibility in the protection of minors, with measures against harmful and manipulative content and against persuasive design mechanisms and capable of fostering compulsive behaviour. Proposals include age verification systems that do not require the collection or storage of personal data, greater transparency on algorithms, a “young mode” without targeted advertising and mandatory ethical standards for so-called “AI companions”. Euro MPs also ask for more transparency in the training of artificial intelligence models and the ban on using AI to create, manipulate or modify without consent images or videos of sexual content that portray a person.

In view of the revision of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive, Parliament also proposes to assess the inclusion of professional influencers and creators in the regulatory framework, clarifying their status and responsibilities and providing advertising transparency obligations. Finally, MEPs call on the Commission and Member States to develop a European code of conduct for influencers, agencies and platforms. The goal is to increase transparency on sponsorships and counter unfair commercial practices, even in the light of the influence exerted by online content on the perception of physical image by young people.
