“Today the 40th anniversary of Chernobyl’s tragic accident has marked humanity’s consciousness. It remains a warning on the risks inherent in the use of increasingly powerful technologies. Let us entrust to God’s mercy the victims and those who still suffer the consequences. I hope that at all decision-making levels always prevail discernment and responsibility so that every use of atomic energy may be at the service of life and peace,” the Pontiff added.
