Pope to be discharged from Gemelli tomorrow, returns to Santa Marta

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “The good news is that tomorrow the Pope will be on discharge, back to Santa Marta.” This was announced by Sergio Alfieri, director of the medical team at Policlinico Gemelli that followed the Pontiff in his hospitalization that lasted since Feb. 14.

“He will be discharged in a clinical condition that has been stable for at least two weeks,” he added. “There is a prescription to continue drug therapies, and the recommendation of convalescent rest for at least two months is very important.

“The bilateral pneumonia was resolved and Pope did not have Covid,” he clarified. “When a patient with the Pope’s overall condition incurs such a serious infection, and you get to discharge, which doesn’t always happen in these cases, the further progress is at home. The hospital paradoxically is the place where you get the most infections,” the medical team director explained.

“Discharge is decided by the doctors. The Holy Father would have liked to go home a few days ago when he was better, but he was an exemplary patient, he was able to listen to the suggestions of me, Dr. Carbone and all the doctors,” he later clarified.

“She is an 88-year-old person, new infections there may be, but these are the fears of any normal patient. On the recovery of speech it is difficult to say, but we hope in a short time.” So instead Luigi Carbone, deputy director of the Department of Health and Hygiene of the Vatican City State and the Holy Father’s referring doctor.
